fair point, but I let him walk for anything over 11.5M no hesitation. If he also just wants a 4 year deal, fine by me. Just because he got paid too much on his last deal doesn't mean he gets a crazy raise on this one. Matthews is a different beast, of course his contract will be more. That and I'd be shocked if Marner left Toronto

Like when McCabe and Liligren were on the 2nd pair and he wasnt he had moments. Dallas for instance was his best game.
But since those 2 have been out its been bad, bad and more bad.
They either need to get someone to push him down to the third pair till they get 100% healthy or find a way to turn him into an upgrade like EDM did with Barrie</div></div>
bro makes Barrie look like Jaccob Slavin defensively. It's that bad. Can't be spending 4M on someone you need to shelter on the 3rd pair.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>Maple Leafs tie franchise record by allowing 4+ goals in 7 consecutive home games to begin a season, equalling the mark set in 1976-77
Remember the good old days when we used to set records for wins and points in a season.
The Leafs have 3 regulation wins in 13 GP. Just four teams have less.
<a href="https://x.com/kpapetti/status/1722606075139219703?s=46&t=dH-VoNCgylRI5xOiyMXqOQ" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Kevin Papetti</a>
Toronto was outplayed in 2 of their 3 regulation wins (DAL & WSH).
They rank:
27th by xGF%
25th by xGF%
This is despite:
-Matthews having 13 G and 19 P in 13 GP.
-Nylander and Rielly playing extremely well.
But remember, two D’s and two 4th liners will fix this.</div></div>
I think you underestimate what the impact of getting two defensive D plus getting two regular lineup D back from injury in McCabe and Lily back plus getting rid of Klingberg who has been god awful would be
Klingberg might be the worst defender I have ever watched at the NHL level

ya obv picks to balance and I'd lean to EDM's side, but ya nothing crazy and this would just be the base structure. Think it gives Boston a legit top 6 C at a really nice cap hit, Sway takes the run as the starter but they're betting on Skinner to bounce back behind Boston's unreal D too.

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>The issue is this team is not just D away, there are plenty of issues from penalty killing, 5v5 defense, depth scoring, still have the same coach, like could go on and on.
I am at the point and really hope Treliving rides this out till everyone including Timmins is healthy and they are forced to make a move.
Fire Reaves off to whoever will take him, send out Samsonov, and call up Martin Jones to platoon with Woll (but it is Joe's net)
A roster looking like this:
Knies - Matthews - Marner
Bertuzzi - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Domi - Järnkrok
McMann - Kämpf - Steeves
Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Klingberg
Woll
Martin
Extras
Timmins
Gregor
This gives you (if you don't have to take back salary) 2.3 to work with at the TDL.
This gives you the opportnity to see A - Is Woll our guy? B- Are McMann/Steeves viable depth options
I actually feel confident Woll can be a NHL starter but you can always move out a McMann/Steeves/Klingberg now giving you close to 8 mil (salary in/out) to make moves.
<strong>That is my wish, too each their own. </strong>
I would take my chances with that roster then give up picks/prospects</div></div>
I think the team is 2 defensive Dmen and a 4th line winger away from having as good a chance as anyone, assuming brick Woll keeps bricking (I have a lot of faith in him). And if I'm Tre in one of just 5 years left of competing, I'm sparing no asset to make that happen over the next few years, starting today.

Interesting read into how Treliving's philosophy on when teams should be built.
I also believe this will give us a very good indication of how much influence Brendan Shanahan has over his GM's.
It would actually be refreshing if Treliving does not waste picks/prospects on UFA players.</div></div>
yes to not wasting on UFAs, but no to not addressing this blue line. Whether its Tanev+extension or someone else D is much needed

ok so maybe you could say he was worth a 1st last year. Teams don't pay for a rental on last year's results if that player then produces f all the year after, regardless of how bad their team is

if it came to moving Bert, I think we'd at least want a F supplement - thoughts on:
Tanev (50% ret.) + Dube for Bertuzzi + Timmins
would probably rather do a futures deal but like we need D help so if moving roster players is what it takes I'd at least entertain it. Though even at that idk that I would, whether the value on this deal is better for Toronto or not.

Woll had a bad game vs. Buffalo rebounds nice vs TBL
Sammy good game vs Boston (minus shootout) **** game vs. TBL
In general they got his number he should not play them as Kucherov especially has him figured out
Putting him in the right games and getting him back in the right mindset is needed
Like look at Woll **** game Saturday rebound Monday. Sammy should have played Saturday and Woll monday but meh its passed. As we have seen this from Sammy before but he always finds a way to reset. Just dont play him vs TBL whenever they play again pls lul</div></div>
except Woll is a rookie goalie with a .930 sv% and Sammy has an .855 sv%. Plus Woll's "bad games" at least kept them in the fight while the D wasn't playing well, games are consistently getting pretty well out of hand with Sammy (out of hand unless you have Auston Matthews on hatty watch every game, of course)
