You are correct, but as mac11_716 indicated, with the depth at center that the Sabres have, it could be the best path to follow to ease him into the NHL.
Completely agree, it would certainly help to have more prospects than to trade them before they have demonstrated their full NHL potential.
Subban is certainly leading the Amerks to the playoffs.
Since mid March he is 5-0-4 with a 2.25 GAA and a 0.921 SV%.
When we picked him up last year, I told my family he was going to be a good one.
I certainly hope we sign him again.
Good post.
BTW you are not the only one who underestimated Casey.
Maybe Granato keeps him on the top line and Tage on Cozens wing to give the Sabres more balanced scoring next year.
Savoie could then center Peterka and Quinn to add an additional threat.</div></div>
The fact they have all this talent that is young, locked up or on rookie deals, and they all can still grow is absolutely amazing. They’ve done so well in giving themselves flexibility up and down the lineup, it is a testament to their scouting and how much they’ve turned it around. They have one or two missing pieces and they’ll be contenders.

I don’t think they’re open to moving either. If they wanted to move Savoie, they could have gotten Meier or Chychrun. I put Savoie as 4C because he either has to be in the NHL or WHL and having him in juniors again seems like a waste. Putting him on that line is essentially the Krebs model, where they put him on the forechecking line and it helped him develop into a solid two-way player. Same idea for Savoie and he could move up the lineup as guys get hurt.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>swinny</b></div><div>Agree with this 100%
Further, I would argue that team defense plagues the Sabres. This is not addressed at all in the bottom 6 (I wouldn't mess with the top 6). Kulich needs a year in Rochester. So does Savoie. There are some shrewd adds via the UFA market (Erik Haula, Tyler Motte), and given the Sabres depth at foward, better ones via trade (can we all say Scott Laughton?).
And..... Hill's contract maybe a but rich. I can see $3 million, but his injury history I think stops him.from seeing $4 million. Frankly, I would go with Levi and Lukkonen. Improving team defense will go a long way in making that tandem look awefully good - not that Levi hasn't already.
This offseason his huge for Adams, as the Sabres are completely poised to make a major move to being just not relevant, but dangerous.
These moves don't do it imo.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Finn2016</b></div><div>I’m a Buffalo fan and fan of Larrson’s play but not realistic for Seattle. Rutta trade also reaching bit much</div></div>
I appreciate both of your opinions. Rutta was essentially move all these parts to Pittsburgh and get a pick and salary back to make it work, but I see what you’re saying. Larson would fit a big need, but I don’t fully think Seattle does it.
I do agree the bottom six needs more defensive minded players, but the team has shown they’re not going to block their young guys. Kulich could definitely stay in Rochester but they did this with Quinn so I can see them doing it again. Savoie can’t go to Rochester and is too good for juniors so he may be forced to be here, but he’s so talented I think that’s fine.
Hill reminds me very much of Ullmark and while it may be an overlay, he’s good and proven he can be a starter. I don’t think they can go into next year with Levi and UPL. That’s too much inexperience for a team that has shown they can take the next step with competent goaltending.

I've posted a few ACGM with the idea of Markstrom as an option for Buffalo and would like both of your opinions, if you would be so kind. Granted he is having a down year and carries $6m/year for three years, but he has a strong track record and is 33 so while he isn't too old and can still play a few years, he doesn't necessarily block Levi if he becomes what we all hope he is. Plus you won't have to give up too much to get him as Calgary would probably like to shed his contract.

Why don't you guys pick Lehner up from Vegas? Only two years left at 5 mil, should be good to go next season, and Vegas likely tries to unload his cap this summer.</div></div>
Lehner hates Buffalo from his time being here. He credits the city/team a lot for his substance problems.

My guess for next seasons opening night roster
Kulich and Savoie are going to be really interesting for next year. Kulich just hit another level of production the last few weeks in Rochester and Savoie is too good for the WHL but can't play in Rochester. You would almost think they would both be here but, like you have, it pushes someone like Peterka down the lineup. It is such a strange feeling having so many good young players that we don't know what to do with them all.
Trading Olofsson almost seems like a given at this point, and Mittelstadt seems like he would be the other odd man out, especially with Greenway coming in and taking up a wing position. Good problems to have.

Finally, the turnaround of the team? Tage's emergence is 90% Tage and 10% Granato seeing his untapped potential. Cozens? Botterill. Dahlin? Botterill. This isn't to say Adams doesnt deserve credit, hes done well building the hockey ops dept, but this is independent from being able to build a winner and its also disingenuous to assume that any success falls entirely on his work.</div></div>
But he hired them. They work under him and answer to him, and he gives them the power to do their jobs and gives them input. Yes, he doesn't do all the work, but he empowers his employees and listens to them.
He also drafted Quinn when some questioned that, drafted Power, traded up for Peterka, and has made good picks throughout the draft. He deserves credit because he was literally the only person left in the department and then rebuilt it. He didn't trade Tage like Botterill tried to do, but he also then signed him before he exploded into a stud.

But that is viewed as "he isn't good enough to do it himself so he had to hire people to do it for him" which is legitimately a good thing to be self aware that you need help and then bringing in people to do their jobs and do them extremely well.
When he first started selling that he wanted people who wanted to be here I wasn't buying and now every guy on this team wants to be here and it is amazing. But when Tage is scoring 40 a year and averaging nearly 90 points a season and Cozens is a PPG player and they're signed for $14.5 million a year and Kulich/Savoie/Quinn/Power are studs and all guys he drafted, we will really be mad at him for being terrible.

Not just sitting on our asses
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Stadel</b></div><div>A) They are absolutely out of the playoff chase, don't kid yourself.
B) There's no denying their drafting kicks ass now, but thats not KA. Thats the analytics group they brought in.
C) They have to spend to the floor, so they're going to make team friendly re signings and drafting a priority, because thats the cheapest way to build a competitive team. They'll flirt with 8-10th place for a few years before fans catch on. And then he can just fire KA and bring in a new guy to do more of the same.</div></div>
A) I'm not kidding myself because we have all seen that they can rip off a handful of wins in a row, and they have 1-5 games in hand against all of the teams in front of them. Plus, if they make a trade that could amplify how many points they are able to earn throughout the remainder of the season.
B) That is part of being a good GM though. He has surrounded himself with a good staff that knows what they are doing and is more of a facilitator and communicator and I am fine with that. He may not be the best at scouting or evaluating but he has certainly brought in good hires and listened to them, and even made guys want to be here.
C) It may be the cheapest option but drafting and keeping your own rather than blowing a lot of money on free agents is a smart way to build as well. I don't see how they will middle around in 8th-10th for several years when the team and players have taken big steps every year. I just don't think that because they haven't made a big move or because they can't seem to play well at home/big games means they are completely cooked for this years and years to come. If anything they need help in goal, and we all know they won't make a big move there because they won't block Levi. That may be the biggest shortcoming, IMO.

This guy isn't here to build a winner, he's just there to keep everyone happy and be the punching bag while ownership competes with Arizona to see who can ice a better floor team.</div></div>
How is he not here to build a winner? He has hit on draft picks, not overspent in free agency, has signed their best players to long-term, team friendly deals, and they have are by no means out of the playoff chase. They have committed to over $100 million in deals in the last year on extensions. Why would you spend money just to spend money?
Just because they haven't done a deal doesn't mean they won't. At the beginning of this season nearly everyone said they were a year away. I don't get the constant negativity when the team is finally on the upswing and they have a loaded farm team.

I keep thinking that the "big swing" Adams would be taking this summer is going to be someone we don't think of (why I did an ACGM with DeBrincat) and Keller fits right into that model. Everything about him aligns with the team's trajectory.
