I think this is a fair trade, I just don't know if either side considers it. I personally like it though from the Habs needs perspective

Who exactly do you think is on Detroit's top line if it's not those three...

raft day trade with STL
The front office, the whole team and the fans seem to absolutely love Neighbors. He’s made an extremely ineffective power play very effective due to his willingness to pretty much do anything you tell him to.
I don’t see any world where him or Thomas are moved. I could see arguments for pretty much any other player on the roster, even though some wouldn’t make sense.
I really like Guhle, I also don’t really see MTL moving him, for the type of trade we’d probably look to acquire him for. Not to mention we would also then probably need to find a way to move a defenseman not named Parayko for a 2nd liner afterwards. Pretty much robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Not the worst idea ever, just highly unlikely either team would part with their guy.

In 2024/25 I could see something like
Buchnevich - Thomas - Kyrou
Neighbours - Stephenson - Snuggerud
Dvorsky on 3rd line C or W and when he’s ready for 2C in 2025/26 or 2026/27 season, then Stephenson would slide to 3C.

What can we do
Thats probably what matheson is worth because of how awful his defence is, but I wouldnt be happy with this return still.
I dont think he fits the blues, he is too much like Krug and Faulk, all offence, no defence

But Kyrou is similar to other players we already have
We could be looking for more of a 2way forward with size
Just a guess though
I’d say it’s a “maybe”

Offseason Series - Ducks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>noted</b></div><div>LeCombe can play right side. I agree more ideal to trade Krug but also harder to do so</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>Can he play it well enough to be a productive RD2? I like what Kessel has shown, but i also liked what Tucker shhowed last year. It's too early to put all the chips on him into being a top 4 guy. I'm very comfortable with him paired with Krug in more of a 3rd pair role though. I'm just not sure I'm comfortable with Lacombe and whomever we'd have to sign to be a top 4 pair</div></div>
He can play the right, he did it in college, but this year he has played way better on the left (part of that too though is how terrible most of the Ducks D has been). He has played his best hockey paired with Gudas. He struggled a bit at the start of the season playing pretty much exclusively on the right with Fowler, so for a still developing defensemen, I probably wouldn't advise playing him on the right side

Potential RHD option
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Some version of Faulk for LaCombe seems reasonable -- what do Hayes and Strome have to do with this?
Vatrano and Killorn are our two second-line wings until Cutter Gauthier is ready . . . unless we win the you-know-who sweepstakes. (Don't want to jinx us.)</div></div>
Mostly just looking long term, Hayes contract expires before the year the Ducks have like $20 million needing to go to RFAs, just clears out space to help with being able to sign them all and stay under the cap. I have an unposted version of this (its kind of wonky) where I tried to guess all the RFA deals and somehow they don't fit under the cap so having Strome's $5 Mil off the books clears some space to help make that happen.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>noted</b></div><div>Why is Gauthier getting $9.8M for 2 years before playing a game?</div></div>

Who say no and why
Gotta be honest, Thomas would cost more to acquire than CC would. That being said, CC isn't going anywhere even for Thomas. If we're trading for a top 6 C we're doing it from a position of surplus, we can supplement value elsewhere but I'm not sure we have pieces available to intrigue STL into trading him to us.

Funny that you are prorating your player. If you do just the last 3 seasons, it’s not even close…also you talk about Caufield like he is some prolific goal scorer when he’s never put up 30…
Thomas drives play. Caufield is a passenger.</div></div>
Precisely the same point I keep trying to din into this kid when comparing Zegras (93 assists vs. 64) to Caufield (72 goals to 53). He thinks that the goal-scorer is the rarer talent. People who understand hockey know that except for the rarified level (Ovechkin, Pastrnak) it's the line driver.

I don’t know, I’m a strong believer in Thomas being better than Caufield. I just think his style if play is more beneficial to a team, especially come playoffs. I’m not saying Caufield isn’t good, I just value Thomas more. So if it’s me, gotta add a 1st or 2nd w Caufield. I’ve watched Thomas a lot this year. He’s about to assert himself as one of the top C’s in the game for the next 6-8 years. It’s just my opinion…I could be way off.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>No, Caufield is the rarer player, how many true snipers are there in hockey? Guys with the potential to put up 30, 40 or even 50 goal seasons? Now how many Suzuki type centers are there? Good 2 way centers who will average between 60 and 80 points a season? The ratio is probably about 2:1 in favour of the Suzuki type of players.
Edit*** So I checked, on 2022-23 there were 12 Centers who scored between 60 and 80 points, there were 5 LW and 8 who scored more than 30 goals. So my evaluation was off but it still isn't a trade to be made, you don't create a hole in your lineup to fill another one, that's illogical, that's how you end up with Drouin for Sergachev types of deals</div></div>
Habs with Suzuki and Thomas are a top 3 team in the league next season for sure

If they won't pay anymore more than Suzuki we may as well start the next rebuild, he's not good enough to be the top guy on a cup winning team. And Kyrou makes like 300k more, that's nothing for an NHL salary.
