I think the assumption that the unique offer sheet scenario will have a material impact on all salaries is wrong. These are very rare scenarios. Just because you overpay a guy in an offer sheet does not mean the next guy in free agency gets to ask for more money than he would otherwise.
Everything should be looked at subjectively. What a guy signs to extend somewhere cannot be compared to what a guy signs in free agency. Leverage will dictate the dollar, not necessarily the players ability. If Marner gets $12M in an offer sheet, that doesn't mean Aho extends with CAR @ $12M in a year from now. (Not a perfect example but you know what I'm getting at).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>biglite351</b></div><div>A bridge deal is 1 year, maybe 2 if the guy is still mostly "potential" and he thinks he needs a little more time to become top notch. Marner has 61, 69 and 94 points... 1 year if he really wants to help the team get past a sticky cap situation, but that is it, and frankly no reason for him to even do 1. 3 is unicorn town. Especially if it is so that they can afford to bring Zucker in at $5.5M.</div></div>
This is what I'm saying. There is no benefit to Marner to bridge for 3 years at less than what he's worth. It's nice for Leafs fans, but makes really no sense for Marner. He's proven what he wanted to prove. Oh, and you told Tavares when he signed he'd have Marner flanking him...

Low-key, I actually hope they would. They massively overperformed this season and 4 unprotected 1sts + an overpaid Marner crippling their cap situation? YES PLEASE!</div></div>
You need to put yourself in their shoes. Some teams have to overpay. The Leafs don't, the Rangers don't... but some cold weather cities and some secondary markets do.

If a GM in a market that struggles to find super stars has an opportunity to get one, they should do it. By the time these offer sheets materially impact salary inflation, half the GMs in the league will be elsewhere.

I think you'll be surprised. Not everyone has the forward firepower the Leafs do. And not everyone has a desirable market to sign in.
That would be the price say, the Islanders would have to pay.

Haha yes, that is true.
I still think treating Marner as if he has no leverage is silly. He can get 7 x 12 next season on the open market. I can't imagine he has any interest in signing a bridge deal. He's going to want a lockout protected long term deal. All I've heard from his camp is that he has no interest in leaving money on the table, nor should he - Matthews and Nylander didn't, why should he.

If you wanted to bridge Marner, it should have been a year ago. Sure, he doesn't have arb rights, neither did Nylander. You have a landscape in the NHL right now that is more primed for an offer sheet than ever before. I'd be very careful in playing hardball with Marner.

Yes, I think you've mistaken what a bridge deal is. It's not where they take less term and less money so they can prove something they've already proved.
Have you heard of the term "team friendly deal that would never ever happen".

Never in a million years do the Devils trade out of 1st to the back half of the draft, all for 1 year of Kreider.

The Rangers have no appetite for another goaltender. This is essentially Kakko for Drouin in my mind... and no thanks, x 10.

He's a dime a dozen, no need to pay up for if you're COL.

Why would any team in the league take on your biggest cap problem for free? They're just in the mood to do them a favor or something?

I understand the goal of ridding these cap constraints, but I think you need to understand that the Rangers need to pay to make that happen - not the team accepting the bad contract.
You might be able to get a 3rd for Namestnikov. Maybe.

A premier prospect and a 2nd (or 1st!) for 1 year of Chris Kreider.
Anything for Brendan Smith.
