19/20 Leafs' Cap Projections
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>If the Leafs keep him on the roster this year...very possible they can pay all their Perf Bonuses this year without carryover. Next year he can be on LTIR, the Leafs can spend to or near the cap, and only have about 400,000 estimated in Perf Bonus carried to 2020/21.</div></div>
I totally expect them to keep Horton on the roster this season, see attached for my 18/19 projection. <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/158321&post_id=542064">https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/158321&post_id=542064</a> It's all about being cap compliant with his contract on the roster to start camp to begin the 19/20 season that is the concern. With the massive raises expected, one of those contracts would have to be withheld until he was placed on LTIR. With LTIR, you are only able to gain relief for the amount over the cap it carries on the day the player is placed. Unless the Leafs are significantly over the cap that day, they will not gain the full 5.3M of relief. Hopefully there is no PB carryover from this season to compound with the retained Kessel contract. Any amount of the Horton contract that is not able to be placed onto LTIR is only going to add to that.

19/20 Leafs' Cap Projections
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You know that Horton has a 400,000 thousand effect on the cap hit, it just delays the PB one year. Hardly signifiant at all. Does cheaper Arizona want to pay 5.3m out of pocket for Horton,,,,doubtful.</div></div>
It's not about his effect on the cap hit, it's about being cap compliant with his 5.3M aav on the first day of camp before he can be placed on LTIR. That is going to be impossible with how tight the cap is. His real salary paid in that last year of his contract is 3.6M which is why it's appealing to team's like Arizona (could also look at Ottawa and possibly Vegas). I also understand that his contract is not insured for the injury he suffered which makes dealing a player like this tougher (which is why the Leafs have not spent the assets to do so yet while they are not in need of the space). Please explain the only $400,000 cap hit of he stays?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>No LTIR for Horton this year. If Nylander makes anything north of 6M on a 7 to 8 year deal, Dubas hasn't done his job.</div></div>
He will be placed on injury reserve for the roster spot, not for the cap relief which is what I was getting at.

The moves going into camp will be close to this and it shouldn't piss off any logical Leaf fan (the few of us that exist lol). Horton will be placed on LTIR but for no relief help. The Leafs don't want any bonus overage carryover next season when 34 and 16 are up. They are the only team this year being hit with a bonus penalty (2.55M) and could be another 3.7M+ depending how 34 and 16 play plus any other eligible rookies that may be inserted into the line up. Nylander's deal is probably closer to where he wants in here but it's not far off. Dubas will probably try and get it done closer to 6.5ish is my guess.

I agree with you on Mac as of today however with Sparks' contract now a one-way and him winning the Calder Cup and AHL goalie of the year, he likely won't be able to go back down again. I'm not opposed to either in the backup role to Freddy but just trying to manage the asset with the highest potential. His cap hit is also 300k less which doesn't seem like a big deal but it all factors in with potential bonus carryover. As always, it will ultimately depend on how the players in these roles perform at camp and in the preseason.

If Samsonov isn't ready for the NHL and needs some time in the minors to start, Mac would be a good fit. If not, the Leafs can always waive him and if he clears, his 925k hit disappears anyways. NYR, WPG and STL may be alternatives for trading partners too.

I'm really curious to see how Zaitsev bounces back. Last year he struggled with illness and injury and wasn't the same when he returned. He didn't look as good to start the season as the year prior too but I'd be willing to see how he starts this year and give him the benefit of the doubt. I could see them making a pitch for a dman too but not until a month or so into the season once a few teams have had disappointing starts and are looking to change things up.
