Doughty Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>What is even happening here? No deal, ever, will be structured that way.
Hamonic just went for a 1st, a 2nd, and a conditional 2nd. What is even going back to LA for Doughty in this case? The only real value to LA is the removal of the Brown contract...but you're sending Phaneuf back at a higher cap hit even after $1M retained.
You're over-thinking this. And under-valuing Drew Doughty, a Top 5 dman in the world.
Try this:
Doughty + Brown
for
Chabot + Hoffman + 2019 1st + 2018 2nd</div></div>
Vanderm don't be so obtuse. This trade the kings would improve three draft picks, get an additional 2 picks and also get 4 NHL players at a cap hit they are worth. Boro and wideman are still both young and will be ufa after next year but will be on the cheap to resign, phaneuf had a good year and although his cap hit is 7 he only actually costs 6 so if Ottawa retained 1 mil he only costs 5 mil. Which he is worth. Plus the kings get rid of the brown contract with no salary retained. Essentially they get burrows for brown at less than half the cost and a similar player with only 2 years left instead of 5.

Yeah but your an avs fan so... Joe sackic has your whole fan base skewed for player value. Which is why you still have Landeskog and Duchene even though he's been trying to trade them for 2 years.

Dude they are getting 4 NHL players at salarys they are worth because of the retained money. They move up in position for the 4th rnd pick and get a second in 2017 and Ottawa takes on all of the Dustin Brown contract with no retained salary. Sure say Ottawa puts in the first rounder instead I'm sure you think that still isn't enough. Did you see the trades that happened yesterday at the expansion draft haha.

Losing Claesson would be worse than losing Methot. Losing Methot can be replaced by another lock down defenseman like Karl Alzner likely for less money too.

You realize that Thornton had a significant knee injury right? Torn ligaments at his age it's likely best to stay far away. I like the Smith signing but he is likely to get offered more elsewhere like Toronto.

Well it would suck if Claesson is gone but Ottawa has Chabot ready and Harpur did well too. To be honest I would rather just let Methot go over losing Claesson but if they take Claesson then we will still be okay.

I think Dion would wave his no move clause for his hometown team. Then the oilers don't have to change anything in their plan. Vegas also won't take him away.

Agreed. And is the Panik deal supposed to be pre expansion draft? Cuz it makes zero sense for the hawks</div></div>
These would all be pre expansion draft. The trade for Silfverberg is only if the Ducks plan on leaving him exposed. Which may or may not happen. But if the Ducks are planning on leaving him exposed then at least they get something in return for him and also get a player that is attractive for the knights to draft and they can protect another player perhaps gives them the flexibility to do the 8 skaters and protect more D-Men.

Well I think the sens will ask phaneuf to waive his NMC. If he does then the sens should protect Karlsson, Ceci and Claesson. I think Methot might be a little too rich for the Vegas knights seeing as how he doesn't put up points 5 mil is a lot. That would leave boro and weidman left on D to be selected pretty much. Hopefully they can do something similar with Ryan for waiving his NMC and the knights don't take on his big salary either. If that happens Ottawa doesn't really lose a top 3 line forward or a top 4 defenseman.

Sure it might cost the sens a second rounder and sign him for 3.4 mil. He's worth it for that too but come that time they will know if the red wings can afford 1.7 mil or not. Right now it's not looking good for them salary wise. Sure maybe put Claesson with Karlsson instead they seem to do ok playing together. The coyotes trade would only be worth it if MacArthur gets through the playoffs healthy. Condon has played really well and Dreidger I think if given the chance could do well. He has played well when called upon and maybe more time in NHL games would calm his nerves a bit.

Sign him for up to 1.7 mil or so and it will only cost Ottawa a third round pick back to Detroit. Which isn't much for a player like Athanasiou.

Why give up your future for 2 guys Colorado the worst team in the league doesn't see their future with? They are being shopped for a reason, they aren't as good as advertised. They are both good players but they aren't superstars. If they were Colorado wouldn't even be looking to trade them. I say let Colorado keep them and keep finishing last in the league.

Bigras is not there best D prospect. And they are essentially getting a 2nd round pick. A second pairing NHL D man, a second line center and upgrades of two of their other picks. It's not what the avs want but I do t think anyone is going to pay the price they are asking for. Everyone says their asking price is crazy for a reason. It's because it is. This is a fair trade for a player that has underperformed this year.

Yes but the cap is going to hurt Edmonton. Brassard is affordable for edmonton. Drai is going to be too expensive for Edmonton to keep. Nurse is injured and the oilers need an offensive right shot d man for the power play, wideman fits that bill. The other two defenseman are affordable depth guys they need.

I agree that this isn't an ideal trade for the avs but landeskog isn't playing nearly up to his draft potential and Ryan when healthy is a better player. It's more of a change of scenery for both players.
Wiseman would most likely just be a rental until the end of the season because he is a ufa.

Thanks goodness for the Sens that they only signed Redden for a three year extension...He was declining before he even signed an extension. Agreed Chara was a free agent. Keep in mind at that time the sens told him they were only willing to pay him the same as redden. What I am saying is if Ottawa would have offered him the same as Boston and let Redden walk instead. Chara did like playing in Ottawa and at that time he was on a Stanley cup contending team where Boston was 5 years off.
And Ottawa literally gave up nothing for Phaneuf. Sure he is overpaid but at least he is an NHL player. All the guys Ottawa traded are AHL and they all had worse contracts.</i></div></div>

Unfortunately the news is out that Trouba doesn't want to be in winnipeg anymore. That drops his trade value because everyone else knows he isn't going to play for winnipeg. Ottawa had the same thing happen with Heatley after scoring 180 goals over 4 seasons and trading him to SJS for next to nothing. Why would you pay full price for something when you know the seller has to sell the product?

Moving on from MacArthur
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Banks</b></div><div><i>Ottawa would lose Ceci in expansion in this scenario</i></div></div>
I thought about that and here is what hopefully the sens could do to address that and keep Ceci. As per the Expansion draft rules:
Protected Lists
* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
They could ask Dion to waive his NMC and then protect Trouba, Karlsson and Ceci. Then the expansion team would have to select either Methot, Smith or Phaneuf. Keeping in mind they have to reach the salary cap floor of the NHL and that most teams will be protecting top four defencemen they might be inclined to take phaneuf. Taking mostly third and fourth line forwards and bottom pairing D is going to be hard to make the salary minimum.
