Road to the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>1. No way MTL offersheets Marner. No one is giving up 4 1st round picks for anyone in this lottery format, and no one is offer sheeting a player just to piss off a rival GM.
2. Overpayment for Panarin.. I don't think he's worth the risk. Duchene would be a way better option if they can get him for what you say. Simmonds is not much better than armia at this point, so why give him that contract?
3. How do you think Armia 6'4" and Byron 5'9" have the same style? Are you serious?
4. MTL will have to trade for one. They have some assets but it would make the most sense for them to trade a top 6 winger (like Drouin) for one.
5. Very good call on not buying out Alzner. It shouldn't be an option this offseason.
P.S. the habs gotta bring weal back. A cheap bottom 6, powerplay and faceoff specialist is a better option while waiting for Suzuki, Ylonen, Ikonen, Poehling, KK, etc. To develop than overpaying for Panarin in my opinion. If the habs sign Panarin, these young guys aren't going to ever get an opportunity in 1-2 yrs and the habs will be stuck with Panarin's big contract when they need to resign their guys.</div></div>
1. I do understand that offer sheets are not in the sight of many GM (if not all). But we cannot leave Toronto signing big names and adding talent to their lineup. Bergevin has to see every team of its division as a threat and act upon it. I cannot see the Habs go to playoffs if they at least don't make it harder for other GMs to build theirs.
2. Panarin is way less risky than Duchene no doubt about it. 12M$ is a lot of money but that's what you need to get a player that is already (nearly) set to play with Florida (a direct contender with the habs).
3. They do not have the same style. I was wrong on that. But they are both typical 3rd liners that would cost around 3M$ each at their best. Byron is already at that price. I may undervalue Armia's importance but I think having both Lehkonen and Armia which are terrible finishers is bad for the kids that may be lined with these guys. Kotkaniemi could have finished the season with 45+ points if Lehkonen and Armia would have converted their chances into goals.
4. I think Drouin has a great potential. Of course, we do see how frustrating his game can be. I will still believe in him and keep him in the lineup.
I guess Bergevin read your post. Weal is coming back. He was definitely a great pickup at the trade deadline. I don't mind having him.. But again, that won't give the Canadiens a better chance to get into the playoffs in my opinion. Of course I may be wrong here. As I was when I predicted the habs would finish 3rd at the bottom of the eastern conference this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>I think the road to the playoffs is a tough one for the habs. They're in such a tough division. They aren't finishing ahead of Boston, Tampa, or Toronto, so they're fighting for a wildcard spot. So they're going to have to finish ahead of two of Washington, Pittsburgh, NYI, Carolina, Columbus, and Florida, who I think will be much improved. That's just a tall order. It's likely that Boston and Tampa will take a step back in a couple years, and that should be Montreal's time to pounce.</div></div>
Yea definitely. That's why Montreal has to force Panarin to come. The Flyers and the Sabres shall not be underestimated tho ! I won't be surprised if the top 16 of the league next year has 10 from the eastern conference.

Annual Blockbuster Trade
You still have 11M$+ in cap space. That may not be enough to get into playoffs. Specially if Panarin and Brobovsky signs with the Panthers. Also, we should not underestimate the Flyers and the Sabres.
For the trade I dont think the Flyers need Drouin. They need Gostibehere more than him.

The best we could get for Armia is a second round pick if someone makes an offer sheet (over 2M$). I don't think any team would give a 2nd round pick for Armia. So the realistically best is a 3rd round pick. I put 4 just for fun. Bergevin will deal with this in more details. Armia could be part of the trade I mentionned for a top 4 defenceman.

Definitely.. But he would have costed 7M$ at Montreal with taxes. A bit overpayed but the style he plays is exactly what Montreal needed.
