Description
Assuming the goals for this team should be to peak 2 to 3 years from now, focus on players 25 or younger to fill gaps and mentor promising prospects.

What's shown is a bit of depth chart by position - Romanov will stay in KHL for another year, Brook most likely in AHL, Poehling playing sheltered 4th line minutes in NHL to get his feet wet. Suzuki likely split between AHL and NHL next year. Primeau one more year of NCAA next year, unless he's keen to jump to AHL

Assume Montreal picks at #20 in draft, selecting Arthur Kaliyev at left wing

MTL
  1. Brodin, Jonas
Additional Details:
Solid predictable top-4 left D man the Habs need

Habs get good puck moving left D for top 4
STL
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Reilly, Mike

Additional Details:
Byron brings speed and extra goals to a Blues team struggling to score. Reilly on left D is a step down from Dunn but still a good puck mover. And a draft pick to sweeten the pot.
3.
MTL
  1. 2019 6th round pick (EDM)
  2. 2020 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers get a couple of decent depth wingers for bottom 6 at modest cost and cap hit. Could be any team really.
EDM
  1. Agostino, Kenny

Additional Details:
Really it's an effort to create a few roster spots for the Habs, and get a few late draft picks in return
4.

Additional Details:
Assuming Columbus moves Goalie Bob at trade deadline, they pick up a relatively cheap but experienced UFA backup to fill the gap temporarily

That's not nearly enough for Dunn, the Oilers don't need anymore plugs.

I bumped the draft pick up to a second for Dunn. I think the value's not too far off. If the Blues really want to shake up their leadership this off-season, maybe the Habs could take the last 2 years of Steen's contract (if he waives NMC) in place of one of the other pieces listed in the Dunn trade

The Oilers trade is more about opening up roster spots, could have been any team and lower picks in return.

We aren't really interested in trading Dunn. Keep whatever you got their Dunn is a future Top 4 if not Top line Pairing D-man for us.

Montreal is focusing on the future. They aren't trading one of their best defensive prospects and a 2nd for a 2nd pairing guy. Montreal paid a 2nd + a condition 5th. That is the kind of deal Montreal would make.

Montreal would be stupid to get Dunn, he is having a career year, there is alot of chance they are taking. Buying high is never a good idea.

Montreal rejects Edmonton trade. Agostino is worth more than a 4th + 6th alone TO MONTREAL. He is the best player on the 4th line and does a great job. Hudon is a good depth piece in case on injury

Anything Montreal can get for Niemi is a win.

I know what you're saying about not giving away any futures. And Bergevin said the same, however he also said a few years ago Subban was not going to be traded. However, if you have a guy like Dunn who has now proven he can get it done at the NHL level, that type of player to me is far less risky than the 17 year old late 1st or 2nd round pick who's got less than a 50% shot at an NHL career. Defensemen take a long time to develop, so you draft that puck moving defensemen in the second round this year, and by the time he's 22-23 and ready to really contribute at NHL level some of your key guys in Price and Weber are now mid to late 30's.

To say you're buying high on Dunn is wrong in my opinion. He's having a career year but he's only 22 years old. So there's a good chance he's a 40-50 point per year d-man going forward. That's why he's valuable. That's why the Blues fan above says they really aren't interested in moving him regardless of the offer.

Guys like Brodin and Dunn look like sure things for top 4 based on actual NHL results. Draft picks are great but carry much higher risk and longer timeframe. Even Juulsen, who looks really good, appears more likely to be a 4-5-6 defenseman at this point.
