Description

Make a deal with Devils to move up into top 10 at the draft. Assume Habs hold pick #20 and Devils #8 after the lottery is complete. Habs take some risk that #8 will be a top 2 defenseman of the future. Devils get 3 good prospects in return with lower risk overall. Hudon's points per game in last 2 years is better than most of the Devils bottom 6 forwards so he'd likely crack that lineup and get more playing time than he has this year in Montreal.

At this point I'd rather go the draft route for a potential top left D than spend big $$ on a UFA like Gardiner.

The rookies shown would all get a taste of the NHL next year (except Romanov who may be stuck in KHL) but for the most part will remain in AHL for a year or two.

Thanks for the comment, you may be right and Shero would hold the pick. But like I said in the description, the trade is proposed after the lottery is done when both teams know exactly what their picks are worth. It's not a top 5 pick at that point.

The whole point is any pick outside about the top 5 can be bought at the right price. Every GM knows that. It's a matter of risk tolerance whether you want to move the single pick for a package of multiple players that add up to equal value.

It's not unreasonable to think that NJ has more holes to fill to become competitive, and Montreal management has fewer holes to fill at this point and would see the value in this kind of move.
