Description
Projected cap hits for players the leafs currently own. The leafs will need to find a way to shed approximately $14.5M to get under the salary cap for next season. Assuming players are replaced with $1M cap hits.. losing Gardiner frees up $5.75M. Hainsey frees up $2.75M. Those are the obvious players to not resign, however the leafs will still need to free up another $6M somehow if they want to keep the rest of their RFA's.

Marleau seems like an unrealistic option to trade. Even if they managed to do so without retaining any salary, they would still have to lose another $750K. Trading Nylander would be enough to get the leafs just under the cap. Kadri wouldnt get them under, neither would Zaitsev, they would have to trade both to get under.. which seems unlikely. The best route would appear to be moving Nylander. Or they can explore the option of trading Matthew's.

Ennis, brown, gardiner and Hainsey are more than likely gone. Replaced by 800k average players. So 14.35m turns into 3.2m. To make it simple let’s say that saves 11m. Means the leafs need to move another 3.5m, at which point it’s take your pick... at this point your guess is as good as mine. Zaitsev and Kadri would be the prime candidates but a move with nylander for a Dman may work as well.

It's kinda silly to think Gardiner, Hainsey are Leafs....they are UFAs.
So the more real figure is the Leafs are about 7m over the cap after they have signed their RFA, and have modest replacements for their outgoing UFAs. So as you suggest Nylander might have to go....and in a trade where no cap is returned.

I know Gardiner and Hainsey are gone, but I still had to include them just to show what it might take to keep them.

- Gardiner 62 GP, 30 PTS, +19, 21:13 min / game (Top 4 D)
- Hainsey 81 GP, 23 PTS, +30, 20:15 min / game (Top 4 D)
- Brown 82 GP, 29 PTS, +11, 13:48 min / game (3rd Liner)
- Ennis 51 GP, 18 PTS, -6, 9:56 min / game (4th liner / Depth)

Those are the players you suggest are gone. Brown and Ennis are already fairly cheap, but you're right, they can likely replace them with $800K players. Gardiner and Hainsey played top 4 roles for Toronto last season, can they be replaced with $800K guys? It would have to be players from within the organization.

Then there is the question of replacing whoever the other guy is that hets traded. Kadri (2nd Line C), Nylander (2nd line FWD), Marleau (2nd line winger), or Zaitsev (Top 4 D).

Just trying to put things into perspective, it's easy to say replace this player with an $800K guy, but it will be harder to actually find players who can perform in those roles for $800K.

I agree, moving zaitsev might be tricky if you’re looking to replace him with 800k. The replacement for Gardner is 750k Rosen, hainsey is replaced by 863k Dermott we have 700k Borgman and 894k Lillygren as well as a few other prospects in the 800k range that may step in. Blueline will be a question mark without zaitsev.

The Kadri move is easy, nylander can play 3c and get a 1m winger or get another 3c at the 1m mark. To me that seems to be the easier of the two moves. Kadri should be able to easily bet a decent 3rd liner that is cheap.
