The Nashville trade is to fill gaps in the current roster. Bjustad doesn't seem like a good fit at 3C and we already know that Bonino fills that role well. Kessel plays negative defense and it was pretty glaring that Malkin needs a defensively responsible forward on his line. There isn't a Kessel trade out there where you are going to get 100% of the value back on him, so you might as well use him to fill the holes you have.

James Neal would be an organizational outreach to Malkin. He's likely not going to be happy about Kessel being traded and he was good friends/excellant linemates with Neal in the past. I don't think James Neal is washed up, I just think he needs to be put in the right scenario.
