Maybe, but with DET's lottery luck, the pick could end up being in the 10 range. At least DET will be able to outscore that defense this year.

I'm not sure you're considering the ramifications of that.
1. They're in this same spot next year.
2. If they sign Marner to a 1 year 10.5 million dollar deal, marner can just accept qualifying offers all the way to UFA.

So, the player has all the power. If he signs 1x10.5, the player has the power to turn that into 2x10.5, or 3x10.5, or, 4x10.5 and then he's a UFA.
10.5 for 5 or more years, the leafs match easy. For 1-4 years, it puts them at risking at never having good value for the player, and losing him to UFA as soon as possible.
