Quoting: BOLTLOVER1
TAMPA should have made moves since last trade deadline.. and it showed in playoffs .. team lacks size and grit and leadership and balls .. at this point beggars cant be choosy and Kreider is 1 yr solution .. trade above would add 4.5M and lose 7M for the moron who can do 5th grade math. So still some dollars for Point as we wont resign Erne and will trade some other 1Mish contracts .. like Domingue .. the sad part is Tampa is MORE screwed next year .. short nearly $20M .. trading Joseph removes 3M or so of that and trading a shrimp will help.
NOT TRADING GOURDE HAS SUNK TAMPA .. mark my words .. 32M for 58 career points .. with backdrop of 3 other NTC over market contracts already on books ... like quitting in game 2 against Columbus .. this is unforgivable
I would love to add Kreider (a big, veteran, physical forward who can also score goals) , but you’re wrong that it creates cap room. Callahan is going onto LTIR, and while trading him helps our cap situation by enabling us to accrue cap space, the reality is that this trade does not free $7m of cap room, but consumes around $4m, replacing Joseph’s cap hit with Kreider’s larger one.
Erne was given a QO, so if we don’t offer him anything, he can just take that. He didn’t file for arbitration despite eligibility, indicating that a deal is close. If we back out and don’t re-sign him, that’s an extremely poor look for our organization that will make other signings hard. Our cap situation makes that too risky. We will sign Erne, and if a better prospect comes around, waive him. If our prospects don’t outperform him, he stays. It’s a no-risk signing.
As is, assuming Domingue is replaced with Verhaeghe and we run a 23 man roster, this trade leaves us with around $7m of cap space. If Point signs for that, we’re good and this deal is perfect. If not, the Rangers need to retain salary.
From the Rangers’ side of things, I don’t think they want to have to deal with Callahan on LTIR, and given their cap situation and Kreider’s value, it’s doubtful they retain salary. I’m hoping BriseBois works some magic because Kreider is exactly what we need, and Joseph would compliment the Rangers well, but it seems highly unlikely that this kind of trade works out.
But Gourde is, as of now, our best winger not named Kucherov. He’s small, but he is physical and forechecks well, and is still fast and talented. The contract is an overpayment, but our cap situation is manageable and moving Gourde would have immediately hurt us. I would much prefer several years of Gourde to one year of Kreider (and he’d be too expensive to re-sign with or without Gourde).
