Because Edmonton has almost no chance of making the playoffs and he can be traded to a contender at the deadline? Other than that I'm not sure either.

No contending team is going to go into the deadline with the mindset that they’re a Patrick Marleau away from the cup

TBH, they may be the only team saying we will put you on the first line with two top 10 scorers in the league, and trade you at the deadline when you will be sought (as CD282 said above). I bet if he plays 60 games with Drai and McD he pots at least 35 points.

Just thinking how this might make sense if the contending teams out there think they might not have space. A few of those contenders will have space once the deadline hits and they have injuries.
