Description
What do you think? Tbh, i am not sure i would do it. JP is nothing close to be an NHLer right now so this might not work out well. If it doesn't, at least we would have a first pick.
Drouin > JP
Russell is dead cap.

Also, Habs could flip Russell for a pick with RS.

What's nice with a lottery protected is that next year, it will not be protected. (sens with avs). So, since EDM won't do the playoffs this year, they will keep the first and sens Habs an unprotected first the year after. Now, JP is a maybe, but he still has high ceilings. do the math, but in 20-21, habs will have too much player (Domi - Suzuki - Caufield, Tatar - Danault - Gally, Lehkonen - Poehling - JP/Armia/Ylonen). So instead of waiting, why not try to get a player who might become even better thand Drouin and also, secure a 1st round pick ?

I think you are discounting the effect that adding a young scoring winger to mcdavid will do to their depth. it will significantly increase that teams effectiveness and they would make the playoffs in b2b years. this would be a late round pick. you could get more at the TDL for drouin if you dont want to resign him. This trade is a significant win for the oilers.

Take a look at the ACGM of Statsy9er, it is with drouin. I really don't think this is playoff.

CGY
SJS
ARI
VGK
VAN (maybe not)

are all better and

NAS
STL
DAL
COL
CHI
WPG (if they resign)

are all better teams

CGY - relies completely on goaltending. another year older for that d, i question the lucic move. feel like last year was more a fluke.
SJS - incredibly top heavy and their defense isnt all that good at defense. powerhouse offensive ability shaky goaltending, they will likely make playoffs.
ARI - wild card team. could be a 90+ point team could be a low 80s team. i have them in myself.
VGK - kind of overrated but they still have enough quality to be able to compete there are more question marks on this team this year though.
VAN (maybe not) - i dont think they make playoffs this year.

are all better and

NAS - better will make the playoffs
STL - have them missing due to length of scf and binnington coming back to earth.
DAL - they will make it barring injuries another top heavy team.
COL - they should make it.
CHI - have them missing their defense is just too susceptible and i dont think the crawford lehner split works like intended.
WPG (if they resign) - their defense lost its 2 best players unless buff comes back. you cant over come that this quickly. they dont make it.

are all better teams
