Carter has actually been playing pretty well this year. If the Kings are retaining that much salary, the Oilers are going to have to do better on the prospect front.

Carter would do significantly better if he played on a good team. He looks better than he did last season and just needs some decent linemates to do well.

Kings would take this return if they were only retaining like $750k-$1M. They'd probably even take back Gagner to make the cap work this season. However to retain $2.6M for 2+ seasons is going to cost a quality expansion draft exempt prospect. McLeod maybe.
