The pics complicate this quite a bit. I guess with salary retention it makes sense though. But I could see buffalo just taking the 2.5ish mill from the pens to save their 2nd

I don't really see the pens going after Rodrigues unless he's part of a bigger deal. He doesn't really fit what the pens need unless it was to push someone else up a line as he's definitely not a top 6 forward. Probably barely a 3rd liner at this point and the pens won't be looking down the road too far. Also don't see the pens ever retaining salary

Buffalo is a bad team with little cap space and a below-average number of draft picks this year and next to right the ship. Why would they give up a second-round pick in this year's draft (likely to be no worse than #40 overall) for the privilege of giving Galchenyuk a 30-game audition? They can probably get a fourth or fifth for Rodrigues, thereby improving their cap situation by $2MM instead of worsening it by half a million and creating an additional slot for a young player try-out.
