The market rate on a retained Vatanen will likely be somewhere around 2nd + B+ prospect or two 2nds (or possibly late 1st). For Simmons retained, it is likely a 3rd round pick or 4th round pick and low-end prospect.

But if VAN is insistent on (a) keeping picks and (b) shedding as much salary as possible, the competitive offer would be something like:

Simmons (50%) ... for.... Woo or Juolevi
Vats (50%) along with taking bad contract (Baertschi) ... for ... Podkolzin, Hoglander

so these types of deals....

a. Baerschti / Woo / Podkolzin
b. Baerschti / Juolevi / Podkolzin
c. Baerschti / Woo / Hoglander
d. Baerschti / Juolevi / Hoglander

I'd think in each of those scenarios, NJD would probably add mid-round pick to balance (2021 3rd or 2020 4th)

Does Simmonds at 50% off and Baertschi for Woo work then? It's kinda a hybrid of what you did above.

I was thinking Simmons (50%) alone gets Woo or Juolevi. (Simmons worth 4th rounder, so Simmons with retention is close in value to 3rd rounder)

And Vats (50%) gets Baerschti + A-prospect. (if Vats is worth 2nd rounder, Vats retained plus taking Baerschti is close in value to high 1st rounder)

Agreed
I'd like Woo, seems like the type of guy we are missing. I was hoping they hit a homerun moving Vats (late first was the idea) but that's looking less likely now with the foot injury. We have space so taking on Baertschi if it pushes it over I don't think it would hurt, but sure send Jett over, I'll tell Train to pack his s#!t
