Description
Rationale: This assumes Melnyk still owns the Sens. Accordingly, this is a Melnyk classic deal. He takes on Okposo for three years at a combine cap hit of $18M but real $ of only $14M. He also gets rid of Ryan's two years at $14.5M for both cap and $. So he gets a higher cap hit spready across 3 years and saves $500k in real cash to boot! Win win for a guy who only cares about money.

Ottawa also gets a young player with cost control to take a chance on (which is also their MO for the same reasons).

Buffalo can always buy out Ryan in his final year if needed.

Ottawa move Tierney because they have a ton of RFAs and Melnyk won't want to pay them all. Can't risk walking away from an arbitration award. Ottawa adds the 2nd as they are just about the only team in the league for whom he doesn't have negative value because of the $$$.

Montour and McCabe get traded at the deadline along wih Johansson.

Sens are likely going to need that 6mil in year 3. They'll have Chabot, Tkachuk, Batherson Brannstrom Norris all on some larger extension, and a guy like Duclair who could be getting paid by then if he works out.

The sens need Bobby's cap hit this year and next. Okposo is actually less useful in this regard, and he stays around an extra year when he's not even needed for cap purposes.

As far as the actual value of the trade, it should be skewed in favor of Ottawa, not Buffalo. Tierney and a 2nd is way more valuable than Mittlestadt, who hasn't been anything more than mediocre since turning pro.

"Melnyk cheap lol" is such a flimsy and lazy premise for bad trades that are unfair to Ottawa.

You're making a faulty assumption: that they're going to pay all those guys. Cap hit = money in all those deals. Melnyk's track record speaks for itself. To think it is suddenly going to change in the midst of an economic climate that is only going to tighten...yeah, no. It'll only get worse. He will still be wanting cap in, money out deals and trading away good players for futures. Welcome to Buffalo's world: selling hope each year, every year.

Mitts for Tierney & a 2nd? 🤮🤮🤮

Like Botts is gonna trade his very first draft pick, who he chose in the top10, for a 3C?????
Not a chance

Not viewing Ryan and Okposo as a net zero. Buffalo benefits a bit more getting out from under that third year and pentially freeing up more cap space with a buyout in the last year of Ryan's contract. I see that as added value for Buffalo.

But yeah, Botterill probably isn't trading Mittelstadt but hopwfully Botts isn't making the calls (though now with the current uncertainty he almost definitely is). Who do you put in place of Mittelstadt? Can't just pull him out and I doubt Botterill trades Thompson either (same basic reason). Maybe Asplund but not sure how much value he has in the league. I went with the overpay from the Buffalo perspective.

This is slanted in the Sabres favor and if it is only $500K of actual dollars saved this isn't going to appeal to Melnyk, he may be cheap but that's not enough savings to lose a trade over.

This would be a great trade for Buffalo, can't see the Sens making it though.
