Do both teams accept?
Detroit would get a second goalie to split starts with Bernier. Allen had a great year but played as a backup goalie behind one of the best teams in the league. If he played well he could be a long-term starter until Detroit finds a better option. The Red Wings also take on Steen's contract and buy him out so he can return to St Louis. Detroit is compensated with a decent goalie prospect and a future late 2nd.

St Louis would get help by clearing over $10 million in cap space. They would take on the final year of Zetterberg's contract but he would be on LTIR so he wouldn't count against the cap. St Louis just has to give up a 2nd and decent goalie prospect which wouldn't kill them. They could sign a backup goalie in free agency.

Also, I'm wondering what other teams would be willing to give for Adam Erne. He had a bad year with Detroit, but could provide some physicality to a better team's bottom 6.

At the end 2020-21 Zetterberg's contract is up. With 1yr left on his contract and since he's on LTIR Detroit can get back some of or all of his cap hit if needed. So there is really no benefit to Detroit trading him.

With the cap not going up next year, I can see Z's contract having a ton of value because it can go on LTIR (also, the actually money is only $1mm, and insurance is picking up 80% of that). There are tons of teams against the cap next year, and will need to move bad contracts and make money moves (a few at the same time). It wouldn't be inconceivable if Z's contract alone could bring back a 2nd round pick without taking on any additional cap.
