Description
Vancouver Canucks will have $25M coming off the books next season. And $50M the season after that. This is the only season where we will have to make some real tough decisions. And it will come down to keeping two of either Markstrom, Toffoli and Tanev. Unfortunately Tanev is the odd man out. He is getting older, his defensive skills are declining and he isn’t as dominant with his shutdown defense as he once used to be. His contract also has a high probability of being an anchor. The Canucks also will not be able to afford to keep Stecher unless he takes a hometown discount. And Tryamkin will ask for too much money for only being a depth piece. The Canucks are better off trading them both for some early-mid round picks to a builder team. Or the Canucks can dump Jordie Benn if they find a team willing to take him, like Gudbranson or Del Zotto. And if Ferland starts the year on LTIR, that gives the Canucks more breathing room, but they should be prepared to eat his cap hit if necessary.

If you look at the Long Term Outlook, the Canucks have almost all the anchor contracts expiring in the next 2 seasons. Next season, the Canucks will be able to get rid of Sutter, Baertschi, Edler, Benn and the Spooner buyout. Also Pearson should likely walk as a UFA. The Canucks should replace them with ELCs of Hoglander, Podkolzin, Gadjovich, Juolevi and Woo contracts. Or replace them with cheap options in Free Agency on short term deals. Losing Pearson would be a tough pill to swallow but it will allow us to sign Pettersson and Hughes. The season after that is when the Canucks will get rid of Eriksson, Roussel, Beagle and the Luongo recapture penalty. That is when the Canucks can weaponize their cap space to go big in Free Agency, and acquire that ‘top defensemen’ to compete for the Stanley Cup

BUF already has 5 NHL RHD, they will probably decline due to being a position that they don’t need.

Yeah the Sabres definitely need another RHD.. Lol

I'm sure there's another team that may be interested in Stecher though, Philly maybe or Dallas.

I like a lot of this & similar to my own ACGM.
On Toffoli for 5yrs can probably do 5-5.25m.
Jake will come in higher along with AG.
Need up to 1.7m for Petey/Hughes bonuses.

All in it’s close to what I’d like to see.

Gaudette and Virtanen have not proved anything. And the cap is flat, they are RFAs. Unless one of them goes clutch in the playoffs I cannot see them demanding $2M+. But they very likely will sign around $1.5M for one year. They also have no leverage. The Canucks are strapped as it is and they know that. If they want more than $1.5M, If I was Benning, I would make it clear they are getting traded. And I doubt Virtanen, being from Vancouver, asks for more. And Gaudette recently got married, he has already likely bought a house in Van. I doubt he will ask for more too. Benning will have to play hardball. And if they do call Benning’s bluff, I’d trade them for a 2nd++ or a Top 4 potential D. And drive them to the airport myself. Everybody will have to take discounts. Markstrom will have to take half a million less than he is worth too. And the same goes for Toffoli. If they want to cash their checks in Free Agency, I would let them. I want people who want to be and play in Vancouver anyways. We have enough depth to make up for their loss. And we can use their cap space to acquire defensive depth in Free Agency short term (Ceci, DeMelo). Also I have enough faith in Demko and Ian Clark to make up for Markstrom’s loss. Ian Clark has never disappointed us before and he won’t now.
