--------------------DISCLAIMER-----------------------
This is by no means a finished product. It's an idea that uses the David Backes cap dump as building blocks

My Thought Process:
Last trade deadline, Boston dumped 75% of 35 year old David Backes remaining salary on the Ducks for a year and a half. In return they got 24 year old W Ondrej Kase. Obvioisly Kase is much more valuable than Backes who had negative trade value, so to fill the gap, Boston added defensive prospect, Axel Anderson and a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft (2020). My deal is very similar. This offseason Vancouver unloads 75% of 35 year old Loui Eriksson's contract on the Minnesota Wild for the next 2 FULL seasons. To do this, they give up LHD prospect, Jack Rathbone (Axel Anderson) and a 2021 first round pick for F Ryan Donato.

Since this figuritive deal takes place in the 2020 offseason, Loui has a full 2 seasons left on his contract (Backes had 1.5) and Ryan Donato only has 1 full year left on his deal (Kase had 1.5) so that difference at the very least cancels out, unless you want to say that that slight discrepency means Minnesota deserves more value than Anaheim.

This also helps Minnesota feel a lot more comftorable with, and potentially open to the idea moving Brodin, should they wish to do so.

Please let me know your thoughts and tell me what you would change, if anything. Saying "no" or "this would never/won't happen" is not productive. And I know it's not likely, I'm not saying it is, I'm exploring the idea, the concept of this deal.

Not gonna roast this trade so here goes lol

Rathbone is a big cost control prospect to move out.
The 1st is a big piece to trade.
Retaining cap I get.

Now that said it’s too much. Canucks don’t need more wingets that alone sinks this proposal. Next the retention & high D prospect & 1st is over pay cuz imo it says it ride out & not be desperate. Loui & a 1st won’t find takers for 2yrs. I propose Loui/1st retain 50% if JB says thx Loui but GL. 3m per actual cost is 2.5m per so that’s a 500k salary that is below league min of 700k. The 1st is the carrot or it’s a non starter. Ty

Jesus. Canucks get fleeced here. We’ll gladly keep Loui Eriksson with only two years left than give up our top 3 prospect and another 1st.

That's a lot to give up for the Canucks, but I'm not 100% sure it's a no-brainer for the Wild. In this scenario, they'd have around $28m in cap space in 2021 which sounds like a lot but they'll need to find a 1C to replace Staal's steal of a contract and extend RFAs Fiala, Kaprizov, and Erickson Ek as well as find a starting goalie in case Stalock/Kahkonen isn't a solid duo so depending on how things pan out, they might need the extra $4.5m. Hopefully someone like Menell, Khovanov, or Beckman make the team that year to help provide cheap players.

Yeah, I kinda figured this wouldn't be a massive hit on the Canucks side of things but i still wanted to basically copy the Backes deal.

I saw Donato as slightly less valuable than Kase, Loui as slightly less valuable than Backes, Rathbone as more valuable than Andersson and the 1st as a bit more valuable than Boston's.

This deal also takes away another VAN 1st rounder, but i still wanted to try to copy that deal we saw at the deadline. That being said, this deal still favours Minnesota so some ideas i had to try and make THIS deal work were: remove/lessen the retain on Loui, MIN adds a pick, VAN switches out the first for a later pick (year or round, it doesn't matter)

Overall, I'm just curious to see how a deal would work if the main pieces were: Donato for Loui, Rathbone and a pick. Or would it have to be another, presumably less valuable VAN prospect like Joulevi?

Bruins traded: david backes 25% retained lesser prospect in axel andersson and a late 2020 first for a top 6 potential forward. Donato is not that. Donato would not bring back a 1st at this point in any trade. if the main pieces are loui, rathbone and a 1st they are getting back a rather solid player not ryan donato.
