Description
This is not a "let's go back and not trade for Kane and O'Reilly" exercise. More so it is looking at the Sabres needs and acknowledging that many of the players/picks given up in the Kane/O'Reilly deals might be available to reacquire and would actually fill important needs on the Sabres.

Miller and Kahun needed to be dealt for picks in order to get the Sabres down to under 79 million due to cap overage and salary owed to Cody Hodgson.

The question is, assume for a moment that Ullmark and Hutton give the Sabres at least average goaltending: Can this team make the playoffs?

What happens if the 2021 Buffalo 1st ends up in the top 10? Does it get deferred to being an unprotected 2022 BUF 1st?

Either way I think that's a trade Colorado accepts. Zadorov is definitely available and we need to make some changes on our 3rd line this offseason so Compher is available in the right deal as well I would think.

Thanks for the responses.

RE: the protected pick: Yes. If the pick ends up top 10 2021 the Sabres have option of letting Colorado have the pick or deferring it to unprotected 2022.

RE: Johnson, I don't want to give him up. But with Dahlin likely to be signed long-term, Zadorov signing an extension and with Samuelsson and Bryson coming up, the team should be good on the left side for the next several years. In short: you gotta give to get.

Agreed...and I'm not eager to get rid of him. In the scenario I outline, someone needs to go in order for it to fit under the cap.

Also, looking ahead to 2021-22, the above scenario gives the Sabres about 12.5 million to get Dahlin and Jokiharju signed and replace Johansson, Armia, McCabe and Hutton. Lots of youngsters who might be ready for a promotion (Mitts, Ruotsolainen, Asplund, Pekar, Murray, 8OA, Samuelsson, Bryson, Johansson (goalie), Luukkonen), but at least one other vet would likely need to go before 2021-22 to make the cap work.
