Rebuilds....Generally, a team is not going to get fair value for players when they (in this case Canucks) aren't trading from a position of strength.
Know how the Leafs rebuilt?....(I know they are still about a 22nd place team.) Not so much trades but getting your drafted or signed players developed into NHLers.
The Phanuef trade....Dion was a OK Dman, but overpaid. The Leafs have not received any benefit from the trade yet. It will only start next year, not in players but in 7m cap space for four years relief.
The Kessel trade. Basically a cap dump by the Leafs. Leafs get 6.8m in cap relief, but what players did they get from the deal. Kapanen who is 20 years old and playing well with the Marlies, and a 30th pick which paid for about half of the Freddie Andersen trade. Hardly fair value for a player who can be a top tier NHLer (which he wasn't showing in Toronto.)
The Leafs improvement has been the drafting and the development of Marner, Nylander, Brown, Matthews, Rielly Free agents signings Zaitsev, Soshnikov, Hyman (more of a trade)
Leafs and certain fans are optimistic prospects....Bibeau, Dermot, Valviev, Neilson, Kapanan, Lindberg, Tishakov, and more. Just saying to Canucks fans, to get better, draft well and develop your own players. Trading without a long term goal isn't going to help. And cross your fingers.
