Description
The two trades with Minnesota and Detroit works because both Spurgeon and Glendening are most likely going to be picked up in the expainson draft so at least Detroit and Minnesota gets something for those players. Toronto gets a player who can play on the 2nd line defense with Gardiner and bump down Carrick to the 3rd paring defense with more appropriate ice time. The other key to this trade is that Peter Holland complained to Lamoriello and said he wanted to be traded so this gets Holland out of town along side Polak. The Detroit trade works because this gives a replacement for Holland in and solid player in Glendening and once Leivo is ready to play Sameulsson from the Arizona trade is waiver exempt so he can be sent sown to the Mariles passing Waivers making sure the Leafs are under the limit of contracts. Now that Fylers goalie Michal Neuvirth is on the LTIR Jonas Enroth will give a steady backup goalie behind Steve Mason and the Leafs can sign Kari Ramo.

The Minny trade: Kapanen is interesting (I'm not that high on him), Polak as a rental replacement for Spurgeon is okay, Holland I'm meh on (every team has the same type of player somewhere). Take out the picks and it might be closer. Unless the Wild really love Kapanen, and GMCF does love his Fins, it won't happen.

Terrible. Let's look at the Leafs D... LHD Reilly, Gardiner, Marincin, Hunwck. RHD Zaitsev, Carrick, Polak, Corrado. Admittng chances are need,....but to bring in tiny Spurgeon and Hamilton to play the RD at almost 11m...way too much. Try making this lineup for 2017/18 when Zaitsev, Brown, Brown all need new contracts.
Leafs certainly don't need Samuelsson and Gledening. If a RHD is needed (one only) there has to better route than trading Nylander an Kapanen.

This is not "terrible". The other teams would not make most of these deals.

Philly takes Enroth for a 3rd???????????? "Steady" backup?

A 25+ min per night dman on a great d core for Kapanen and nothing else? They may just protect him...
