Kinda wishful thinking that you can get a high return for Kruger without taking any money back on him. That still 3.1m a year for two years.
The Blackhawks got 2 first round draft picks for Andrew Shaw who then got paid $3.9 mil AAV for SIX years.
Kruger and Shaw post nearly the same career possession number while Kruger starts 71% of draws in the defensive zone and Shaw starts 55% in the offensive zone.
Both have about 350 GP and Shaw has 148 points, while Kruger has 95. But Shaw saw 802 minutes of PP time to Kruger's 146. Not to mention that nearly all of Krugers PP time came in his rookie season.
Shaw has gotten to play alongside top Blackhawks forwards (Toews, Hossa, Sharp, Kane, Versteeg, ect.) many times in his career while Kruger has basically only played with bottom 6 forwards.
Kruger made Sweden's WCoH team. Go look at the other names on that roster.

Outside of the box thinking here, so bear with me. Assuming Darling doesn't extend prior to the deadline AND Crawford comes back healthy. Do you trade him at the deadline? The Hawks need to have a 2nd goalie signed by the time of the expansion draft that meets the requirements. He meets those requirements, but he's a great backup that has played very well in the playoffs against Nashville. He's very cheap. May get a decent return where otherwise you may lose him for nothing. Thoughts? Conflict too much with the win now mentality?
I don't think that is something the Hawks are concerned with as all they have to do is place a qualifying offer on Lars Johansson and he will count as their 2nd goalie. There are no other requirements for goalies.
