Description

One of the issues with Ekholm trades is that a lot of teams that could use him could run into expansion issues. Pittsburgh doesn't have that issue. Marino and Joseph are exempt. Ceci is a UFA. Matheson is playing fine but his contract sucks and Seattle isn't going to take him. Letang and Dumoulin are going to be protected and the third guy is Marcus Pettersson, who is a solid younger number 4 defenseman signed long-term at market value but is clearly not as good as Ekholm.

So basically this idea is to move Pettersson and replace him with Ekholm.

This is a good plan. Also, when Pittsburgh's collapse comes because they trade away every prospect and draft pick, it's going to be spectacular.

The "reported price" is always extremely high in the weeks before the deadline. No one is going to give up that much. There aren't that many buyers and it's a buyer's market.
