The goaltending is HORRIBLE. But other than that. I’d say they’ve been quite successful in their drafting.

why draft goalies when you just trade for them from Washington, works out every time

Lots of high first round selections and not many late round successes. O'Reilly was an early-2nd and Stastny mid-2nd which is nice, and then Barrie in the 3rd -- but other than that, the big names on here are all pretty much top 15 draft picks (with the majority of those in the top 5). With COL poised to be a top team in the NHL for the next few years+, I wonder how their drafting will do when they aren't picking as high anymore.

I wondered about this, and it could go either way. I mean if you're as good as Sakic is at acquiring younger talent outside the draft (i.e. Girard, Grubauer) it might not matter, but I think a good case study would be the Kings: as they remained competitive until recently, they still managed to draft really well, with some great value picks in the late first and second rounds. Sakic might be able to pull it off.
