Buytouts:
- I'm never a fan of buying players out given the dead $$ and flat cap; however, if there were every a scenario where a buy-out is reasonable, Neal and Koskinen meet the criteria... their contracts are just too big and their performance so bad that they cap space provided from buying them up can be used to replace them and then some.
Free Agent Signings:
- RNH: I personally think he played himself out of a contract extension... He's more valueable to the Oilers as winger, so we should pay him as such (vs. other teams look at him as a 2nd line centre so they'd be willing to pay more)... however, I digress. If we extend RNH, we should focus on utilizing him as a 3rd line centre with McLeod and Kassian (this line played well together in the ploffs). If and when McLeod is ready to take over as the 3rd line centre, pivot RNH to second line LW and drop Coleman down.
- Hyman: Gives McDaddy a trigger man who can keep up with him while PoolParty gets into the gritty areas and continues his Elite fore-checking and defensive play
- Colman: Reliable and responsible two-way middle-six player
- Murray: Good middle pairing defense with some offensive upside... Think of him as an upgrade to our second pair over Kulikov
- Ullmark: Has put up decent numbers behind a brutal Sabres team; to me, he's worth the $$ and term compared to other FA goalies
** Note - I'm not a big fan of this fourth line; however, I am a fan of the individual players. Tippet should roll with 3 forward lines and deploy players from the fourth line in specific circumstances (i.e. PK, defensive zone face offs, neutral zone face offs) or rotate them into one of the other three lines as needed. I'd also be a fan of having 11 forwards and 7 defense to allow for the same flexibility to deploy certain d-men in different circumstances.
2022:
For those of you thinking longer term and the need to resign Nurse, Bear and PoolParty (and to a lesser extent, McLeod) in 2022, this plan will provide $20.0MM of availability to resign these players plus replace bottom line / scratched players... this should be more than enough.
Overall:
I may be off on $$ and term for some of the free agent signings, but I do believe this team is (1) realistic, (2) provides significant flexibility through our top-9 and defensive line-ups, (3) doesn't perpetuate cap hell, (4) keeps our draft picks, (5) retains cap space for 2022, and (6) most importantly, makes us a damn good contending team. I may be delusional though... so drop your thoughts.
Very good insight. I like what you did here and think this would make the team much better. This gives Holloway and Broberg a year to ripen in the AHL.
Personally I never wanna see Haas again, but this idea has some power to it. I'd keep nuge on the 2nd and mold Mcleod into that 3C but the key thing that we are missing is shore and ennis in the lineup look how much they helped in game 3-4 Ik bensons a prospect but I'd play him 9 games and then put ennis or shore in if not both.
If we extend RNH, we should focus on utilizing him as a 3rd line centre with McLeod and Kassian (this line played well together in the ploffs)
You realize that McLeod was the center on that line, right? It speaks volumes that when Tippett decided to load up the top line, it was McLeod, not Nuge, who got the 2C gig. I wouldn't be surprised if the Oilers don't re-sign him - there are better wingers available this summer for less than what Nuge is asking for.
