Description
Dubas takes a look at the roster and decides the only name he can trade is Nylander. Bowman takes a look at the roster and decides, once again, that he wants to keep the window open for Kane and Toews.

I've put together this trade based off of various ones I've seen around. No, I don't think Nylander is the problem in Toronto, but with his cap hit, he'd probably be the most realistic to move based on his contract.

I made a couple of trades. The 1st one actually involving the players is the one that I think would make more sense for both teams, but if you fancy Mitchell over Boqvist and Strome/Kurashev over Suter, the 2nd one might make sense, also swapping Kerfoot and Z to bring some #GRIT to the leafs defensive unit (not advised) but thats not a big part of the trade so you can ignore that if you want.

Players in LTIR are traded for picks/prospects or scraps. Seabs and Shaw are on IR to show that it fits on opening night and we still have some room if we wanted to sign someone else, although I imagine Shaw might go on summer LTI anyway.

Let me know your thoughts on the trade(s)

      it's really weird that "trade the one guy you have who is out performing his contract" is somehow always the only move the leafs can make

      I agree. If it were up to me, I would say they shouldn't trade him. He was the most noticeable of the big 3 in the series, in my opinion. I just don't see how they move Marner without retaining, and I doubt they would retain any significant amount of money for the remainder of his contract.

      the same way the sabres move Eichel without retaining. Or even how the leafs moved a guy like zaitsev without retaining. You take shorter over paid contracts, like say, Derek Ryan or Roussel back to make the money work.

      thats fair. Just ****posting to ****post because obviously the contract + the skill makes me want him the most.

      Neither Matthews or Marner looked good this series and would argue neither player has shown they are truly elite, especially Marner.

      Playoff Stats:
      Marner = 32 games played, 25 points and 5 goals (.78ppg)

      While Marner's playoff stats aren't bad performances, those stats aren't best in the league and certainly don't warrant the money he's made so far. If he and Matthews can't figure out how to perform when it matters, they are not part of a conversation of "elite".

      For comparison, an elite winger
      Kane = 136 playoff games, 132 points, 52 goals (.97ppg)

      Kane's best playoff performance was only 3 years into his career and he never played next to a Matthews type of player, more often then not with a rotating cast of 17 different centers and besides Panarin, for two seasons which in the playoffs the Hawks ironically never made it far, Kane never had an elite player on the other wing either when he performed his best.

      I wouldn't touch Marner's contract for the next 4 years (he's a UFA after that) at that cap hit unless he can show he can step it up in the playoffs and prove he doesn't need Matthews.
