Description
Right now, there are two possibilities for Minnesota at the Expansion Draft: leave one of Dumba and Brodin exposed, or leave four of Staal, Coyle, Niederreiter, and Zucker exposed. However, by dealing Pominville for a mid-season rental and swapping a Defenseman for a draft ineligible one before the draft, the Wild can protect everyone of serious value.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In terms of rate production and fancystats, Jason Pominville (who has a great 5v5 P/60 of 2.16 and has only put up less than 1.96 5v5 P/60 one in the last 11 years) is still a very good player. As a fancystats-friendly team with scoring and experience issues and a Forward protection slot to spare, the Coyotes would be happy to have him. However, they are just about the only team with the desire and Cap situation to take Pominville, so the desperate Wild have almost no leverage, and have to pay a pretty penny to unload the expensive 34-year-old (especially if they want to pick up a good rental like Hanzal). They may have to give up even more than I estimated.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
While Matt Dumba holds immense potential and has always been much more highly touted than Brett Pesce, Pesce (who is several months younger than Dumba) is probably the better Defenseman right now. Crucially, Pesce is exempt from the Expansion draft, and the Hurricanes have a Defenseman protection slot to spare.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Now, instead of losing somebody like Dumba for nothing, the Wild can protect all of their important players. Additionally, they acquire a helpful rental in Hanzal, and free up an extra $5.6M for re-signing Granlund and Niederreiter

Not dumping Greenway for a rental. That's a horrible idea. Why trade one of our top prospects for a frequently injured bottom 6 center we'd have on the team for about 20 games?

Arizona wants way too much for Hanzal. They asked Montreal for McCarron, 1st, and a conditional pick. We should in no way try to match that.

I think you're missing the main point of the trade. The Coyotes aren't asking all of that "for Hanzal" and the Wild "dumping Greenway for a rental"; getting Hanzal is secondary for Minnesota in this trade, with most of the value going towards getting Arizona to take on Pominville's contract. It would definitely be less expensive to do this trade before the draft, without Hanzal involved, but getting what most people would see as an upgrade on Pominville would be really helpful for a Cup contender like the Wild.

I would not sacrifice Greenway for Arizona to take Pominville's contract...not in a 100 years! Greenway is probably the Wild's #1 prospect.

Pommer says yes to AZ trade why? I could just imagine that conversation.
GM: how would you feel about waiving your NTC for going to get some fun in the sun and a nice tan.
Pommer: Cool, I like being warm. where we talkin; LA, Ducks (my kids sure do love Disney), SJ, FLA teams (my kids sure do love Disney).
GM: AZ.
Pommer: Nice talkin to ya boss, I gotta a thing.

I have him in the top-4. JEE, Kunin, Kaprizov, Greenway (in no order). Tuch on the outside looking in.

Jacob: I like your logic in the Pommeville deal, but as your Minni friends suggest there are problems. Pommer waiving his NMC to Arizona and is Greenway too much to sacrifice, and the other factor is the Coyotes are cheap.
They like taking on cap when there is actually no money spend on players.

Carolina gets nothing out of the deal for Dumba. Dumba is a hard trade cause someone who have to spot them into their top "3" protected lists most likely. And really he isn' that good now. Now a team like the Leafs who I think can protect five Dmen at the draft are looking to pick up other teams "4th" Dmen. If the Leafs think enough of Dumba to protect him, the Leafs could offer Minni two near ready NHLers who don't need Vegas protection.
Wingers Leipsic, Lindberg, Dmen Valiev, Dermot. could be offered. Pick two, and maybe more.
