Description
I started these a while ago, but never published. Since Fiala has reached agreement on a short-term contract, I figured good time to post.

Some of these are good, some not as good. But the overall range should give good sense of value.

Let me know what you think.

    Fiala, Kevin
    2023 3rd round pick (MIN)

    COMP #1: David Perron (2013)

Using the "similarity score" data from Dom Luszczyszyn at the Athletic, David Perron is the #1 closest comp to Fiala (circa 2012). David Perron was traded in 2013 from STL to EDM. He was dealt along with a 2015 3rd round pick for 2014 2nd, 2015 4th and Magnus Paajarvi (who was 22nd overall prospect in 2010 had 0.36 ppg in 163 games at time)

        COMP #2: Sam Reinhart (2021)

Reinhert was just recently dealt for Devon Levi, Florida’s 2nd best goalie prospect and a conditional 1st pick. Reinhart and Fiala have had very similar numbers over last couple of years. Fiala 94 pts in 114 games and Reinhart 90 points in 123 games. Here Devils would trade a goalie prospect and a pick. The 1st round pick would be top-10 protected.

            Fiala, Kevin

            COMP #3: Victor Arvidsson (2021)

Like Fiala, Arvidsson was a 2014 draft pick with multiple years of control remaining. Arvidsson has put up career 0.62 pts-per-game over 385 games played. Compared to Fiala's 0.59 ppg over 337 games played. Arvidsson was recently traded to the LA Kings for a 2021 2nd round pick and 2022 3rd round pick. But since Fiala's production (0.82 ppg) over last two years is a bit higher than Arvidsson's, I increased the picks here to two 2nd rounders.

                COMP #4: Tomas Tatar (2018)

The pre-trade version of Tatar was the 12th most similar player to Fiala today, according to the Athletic's model. He was first traded in 2018 from DET to Vegas for a late 2018 1st pick, a 2019 2nd pick, and a 2021 3rd pick. Tatar's career numbers at the time (345gp, 99g, 95a, 194pts) were very similar to Fiala's (337, 92g, 107a, 199pts). Tatar was a little bit older, but his salary was a bit lower that Fiala's expected AAV.

                    COMP #5: Mike Hoffman (2018)

The 2016 version of Mike Hoffman was the Athletics’s 3rd most similar player to Fiala. His career numbers (345 pg, 107g, 123a, 230pts) were similar to Fiala’s today (337gp, 92g, 107a, 199pts). Unlike Arvidsson, Hoffman’s numbers the previous two years (0.75 ppg) were better than his earlier career (0.67 ppg). He was traded in 2018, along with a 2018 7th round pick for 2019 2nd round pick, and the 4th and 5th picks in 2018.

                        COMP #6: Patrik Laine

Laine’s overall career numbers have been better than Fiala’s. More goals, assists in similar games played. But looking at more recent production, in the two seasons before Laine was dealt, he put up 60 goals and 56 assists in 151 games played. Fiala’s last two seasons - his best - totaled 43 goals, 51 assists in 114 games played. Both around 0.80 pts per game. Laine was traded earlier this year along with Jack Roslovic for Pierre-Luc Dubois and a 2022 3rd round pick.

                            COMP #7: Vincent Trochek (2020)

Its harder to compare centers and wings since centers carry so much value in today’s game. Trocek had put up 0.76 ppg in his previous three seasons (Faila at 0.68). His season of the trade, he was producing 0.65 ppg. He had multiple years left on his deal at the time. He was traded from Florida to Carolina in 2020 for forwards Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Eetu Luostarinen and defenseman Chase Priskie. It is hard to find four like-for-like players, but here is a stab.

                                COMP #8: Ryan O’Reilly (2018)

O’Reilly is a center, so again one that is hard to line up with a trade for winger, but value could be similar at the time. O’Reilly had longer history as offensive center, but was a little bit older. He had put up between 0.65-0.85 ppg each of the previous seven seasons in Colorado and Buffalo. He had five years remaining on contract at a $7.5m AAV. He was dealt for a 2019 1st round pick, a 2021 2nd round pick a rookie (Tage Thompsson) and two salary dumps (Berglund and Sobotka) to offset his cap hit.

                                    COMP #9: Pavel Buchnevich (2021)

One of the more recent examples. Buchnevich was dealt for Sammy Blais and a 2nd round pick. He has been scoring more than Fiala in recent years and has four years on his contract. While Fiala likely has a bit more upside, I lowered the pick since Miles Wood is considerably better than Blais.

The only one that even remotely makes sense is for Mercer and the picks, and I'd say it's pretty good value for both sides what you have.

What trade comparables fail to take into consideration is the need of the organization. The Wild have long been looking for a quality right handed shooting forward like Mercer so it makes sense, but they just drafted a high quality goalie so Daws is of no interest to them, and they're more of a competing team so the picks don't really do then any well. You're kinda down to just the 1 situation with Mercer and the picks.

Minnesota just drafted a goalie and Wallstadt has a much higher floor than Daws has of a ceiling, so it doesn't really make sense.

I just mean in pure comparison, Fiala and Reinhart a very similar players, it doesn’t have to be a goalie, just another prospect at the same level

Just presenting the range of values. Not really aiming for "best of the list" or "either/or" thing here.
Devils have plenty of young right-shot forwards. But Mercer and/or Holtz would be unlikely to be traded.
