Description
My Game Notes:
Gaudette was a beast last night and looks comfortable at wing. Borgstrom was winning faceoffs which means hes more and more likely to become the 4C, more offensive skill than weve seen in our 4th line in a bit. Hagel was amazing as always, Dach was great and is probably a best fit away from Dach and Kane, and Kurashev is looking prime to secure his spot as well. Great to see Toews look healthy and capable once again. The captain is back and thats great news. As for poor performances in the forward core. Connolly and Nylander looked off, might be the last chance for Nylander before he heads to waivers or a trade for a conditional 4th round pick. On Defense, Caleb Jones was awesome, Stillman was fine, but looked good enough in a shutdown role next to Murphy. Kalynuk was slinging pucks everywhere. Beaudin looked off and showed he needs probably one more year and as for Isaak Phillips. I'm happy he got this spotlight, as he looks like a very quality sleeper pick from 2020, but he's just turned 20 and still clearly a few years away, his performance was not ideal, but you dont exactly expect greatness from a player of his draft pedigree and age.

(Note: "Taxi Squad" is just notable roster misses.)
Going to waivers
Connolly
Subban (but probably traded for conditional pick beforehand)

De Haan is better then both Kalynuk and stillman as of now and will be the lineup barring injury.

Guadette and Kurashev should be swapped as Guadette is a RW or C.

Honestly, I don't know what people see in Stillman, IMO Jones played way better yesterday. An interesting story by Ben Pope today said that Nylander was out much longer than initially expected with his injury. I know no one wants to hear it with him, but his conditioning as a result of his injury may have been why he looked so rough yesterday. As a noted Nylander supporter, I just wanted to throw that bit of information out there so people know.

Stillman is a faster version of Zadorov, similar game; a good #6 or #7 guy. Caleb is okay, I agree he played a pretty good game, but historically, he's not good enough for a top 4 role and his style of play isn't great as a 3rd pairing.

Nylander looked like Nylander. This kid, who's work ethic has been questioned over the years, is running out of runway injury or not.

Since I wasn’t a huge fan of Z, maybe that generalizes to Stillman, IMO Jones could work with Murphy on the second pair, but I want to see more before coming to a conclusion. At the very least I think
Jones offered up a better case as to why he should make the opening night lineup than Stillman

I would also say that Nylander didn’t look like much of anything last game, except bad I mean, I agree that even if he’s still working on conditioning he needs to show more to make the team, but I understand why he might be having a hard time. JC said he just recently started skating because of how his injury healed, that has to be pretty rough for a guy coming of a knee surgery.

lynuk and Caleb are very similar styles; one of them would be good with Murphy but the question is which one. 3rd pairing is going to need De haan with the other in my mind. Stillman being the 7th man when De Haan gets hurt.

Nylander's situation is unfortunate but also worth questioning how much conditioning has he done pre injury and post given his record of not being 100% hockey focused.
