Description
So, Kenny has really made money tight after a nightmare offseason so this offseason will be about building in key positions and 2ndary needs are going to have to wait until keith's contract and the dead money from buyouts move on.

To move Barrie and his bad contract two things are required. Finding a team looking for more scoring from the blueline via PP1 quarterback that can score points. And a sweetener that can be a value contract for term. Seattle makes sense given the lack of offence coming from the back-end and a lack a young forward depth. Barrie helps their OFD and Powerplay issues while, yamo is a hometown boy that is a young middle 6 forward that can be signed for term for cheap. Soucy is sound defensively, young-ish and at a reasonable cap hit that would bring some defensive ability to the 3rd pair (which is needed) without an overcommitment on term. The additional pick can be whatever, I am just using a 3rd to show a pick coming back.

Next is moving some bad money to a team that needs guys with some term that are at least NHL quality, young pieces, and picks. Arizona is that team. They get a 3C and a middle 6 winger which will help not rush all the talent they are going to draft the next couple years. Samorukov could easily be on their 3rd pair by next year, and they get more upper-end draft capital which the Yotes will take all day, everyday. Crouse is a nice, cheap, better version of kassian. a good young 3rd line guy that can score at times and has grit.

Holloway coming back is huge and a benson, mcleod, marody line needs to be the internal solution to 1 of the 2 flawed B6 lines. This trio was the highest scoring line in the AHL for a couple of years so why not go with an internal option that works. Bjukstad is a stable, veteran 4C for cheap. Broberg is destined to take a big step next year (and given Kenny love him, he isn't going to be dealt which further hinders trade possibilities).

The big shift is in net. Koskinen for sure isn't getting resigned and smith is made of glass and will get ben bishop'd sooner rather than later. Skinner is the clear internal backup solution and has proven he can handle that role. Given that the goalie market for trading is a dangerous one, I'd be putting all my eggs into the Jack Campbell basket. Toronto is in cap hell and I don't anticipate teams helping them out by taking an injury-prone Mrazek with term or an overpaid depth piece. At anything over 5.5, he becomes too rich for their blood and becomes available. desperate for a starting G, Edmonton will make sure that the kitchen sink will be thrown in Campbell's direction.

the trades are a starting point ofc. I think potential 1sts are definitely in play to make a move, I just wanted to build a framework of what could realistically be done given the various constraints the oilers face. Obviously, Kenny Holland's lack of creativity will probably mean a much different offseason but, A guy can hope.

The only move I want to see Holland make at this point is moving out kosk for his own personal well being. Outside of that run with the youth in key situations. Really look back on Tippett time here and decisions and dig deep.

Probably have to pay more to get Campbell... Leafs will try their best to keep him and he'll likely sign cheaper for them than us. Remember, Calgary outbid for Markstrom ($6x6) where we were offering ($5x7). At the very least, Campbell gets a Markstrom contract... if he pulls out a Vezina and takes Toronto on a playoff run it will be more.

Tyson Barrie is not on a "Bad Contract" had there been no flat cap for the last 2 years/covid he likely would've got more years and over $5.5m+ per year.. For somebody who finished last season as the top scoring dman he's on a very team friendly deal right now... But, having said that with Ceci being slightly overpaid and playing up in the lineup is making Barrie somewhat expendable, but is they were to deal him I'd bet they look to acquire a top 6 F to play in Yamamoto's spot.. Campbell although has been phenomenal the last 2 years, I wouldn't give him that much for that long, his durability is still a question mark, and do you really think he can sustain this level of play for 5 years??? Doubtful...

gotta overpay in FA ad if there is an area I would overpay to ensure a position is secure it would be in goal. Moving money like kassian and barrier presents the opportunity to do just that. Overpaying a bit is fine if it addresses a serious need which campbell would do. also the trade and FA market are not good so we have to go for it with Campbell or we risk running a crappy tandem against which the oilers can't afford doing again. I think that barrie to either seattle or Arizona is the play but, give he is a T4 RHD PP1 quarterback there will be teams wanting him. I am just being conservative regarding his price tag cause the league know how expendable he is in edmonton
