Description

Devils probably receive the stronger pairing overall but take on a significant cap hit. Jost and McLeod are two former first rounders who have plateaued. Gauthier is the same. None are total busts though and are useful players. Avs improve in the face off circle and make cap space for other moves. McLeod can help Newhook there on the third line. Gauthier anchors the fourth. When Kadri leaves and Newhook moves to 2C, McLeod goes to 3C and re-sign Gauthier as 4C. Compher and Jost are more utility players you can move all around the line up. Maybe the Avs still have to add a little to compensate for the cap change but Compher and Jost aren't 'cap dumps'.

Young, developing teams are not looking for “plateaued” along with an extra $5m in salary.

I think Compher and Jost are the better players in this deal but this makes sense for COL if they want to use the extra cap space to add Giroux/Pavelski/etc

Thanks for the comment. I can understand the decline though when it's two guys who are plateaued going out for two guys who combine as better value (in the sense of being the better players as a pair compared to McLeod and Gauthier) the reasoning is odd. If it were the cap alone then fair enough. That's also why I suggested the Avs add in some way.

We have centers. We have bottom-sixers. Could use a d-man or two. And need a goalie in short-term.

You can have Gauthier, but McLeod stays.
