Description

Even though Marino’s long term contract is looking like a steal with how much NHL D-man are getting paid. And him being just 24 years old still (turns 25 in May) and signed long term. Getting Garland would solidify the Pens top 6 for the next 3 years. With resigning Geno(7.5M) Rust(5.5M) and E-Rod(1.5M) and extending RFA’s Heinen(2.5M) and maybe sign and trade Kappy(2.25M-2.75M).

It gives the Pens a ridiculous top 9 for the next 3 years:
Guentzel/Sid/Rust
Heinen/Geno/Garland
Zucker/Carter/E-Rod or Kappy

And still have Blueger, McGinn, O’Connor, Zohorna, Poulin, Legare, Nylander, Puustinen, Bjorkqvist. And can resign; Boyle, Angello cheaply. Even resign D.Simon for depth if cheap enough.

Getting Schenn also helps plug Marino’s void for a year.

And trading Matheson along with Kappy to Dallas for J.Hakanapa would free up some cap space and give the Pens another RHD option. It gives Dallas a needed LHD, along with 25 year old top 6, mid 6 wing at worst in Kappy. And throw in a mid-round pick if need be.

Matheson playing well this season should be able to be moved in the offseason(7 goals, 14 assists) even if it’s not Dallas. And with what D-man in their prime are making, Matheson’s deal is looking better and better everyday. Especially if he keeps playing like he is(like a legit 2nd pairing LHD).

Ya, the only way the Pens trade 24 year old Marino is they extend Letang this offseason. And I doubt they will either way. He’s contract is looking more and more like a steal everyday.

I meant 5.5M; same as Hyman. Rust will sign 5.5M for 4-6 seasons.
