Staal is VERY not an upgrade on Smith. Smith's been very good. Bear's been the adventure on the blueline and he's gotten a lot better recently.

honestly, Staal has been underatedly good for Detroit. He is +9 on a team where the average defensive +/- is -9. I hope Detroit keeps him.
