Description
Middleton - I checked CapFriendly's contract comparables tool and it turns out not many defensive defensemen with under 100 career games played at the age of 26 get massive deals. So, I gave Middleton a raise of 500K and bumped his cap hit to 1,25 million. He gets to hit free agency as a more proven player at the age of 28. That is a good bet to make on yourself.

Fleury - Fleury has said he'd like to play beyond this season. With Minnesota, he also gets a chance to win. Fleury is now in the same spot Selanne was and Thornton is: he makes team-friendly short-term deals for as long as his body can handle it. Comparables are old men like Niemi (950K), Rask (1M), Vokoun (1,5M), and Bryzgalov (2M).

Fiala - It makes more sense to keep him than trade him. Not only is he a budding offensive superstar (and you generally want to keep those kinds of guys around), the trade market seems to undervalue him. His ask has been 7M for a long-term deal in the past but we can't afford that. How about a shorter deal that lets him hit free agency in his prime? If all else fails, we take him to arbitration again and push the can down the road one more time.

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
FLA needs defensive defensemen and has history with Kulikov. Whatever, it could be any team. Price is the same that DeMelo and others has been traded for in the past.
FLA
  1. Kulikov, Dmitry
Additional Details:
It sucks to trade Kulikov but we simply can't afford him. I prefer Middleton's game over his.
2.
MIN
  1. Barré-Boulet, Alex
Additional Details:
Tampa has played ABB in the minors. They clearly don't value him. IDK, any team can acquire Dewar. The price is a good NHL/AHL-tweener on a cheap deal that can play in the NHL if injuries happen.
TBL
  1. Dewar, Connor [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Dewar is great and it sucks to trade him. I just don't see a way he can be fitted into the lineup. Not only is his QO 1,017 million, he is also arbitration-eligible. He becomes a cap casualty.

I would rather just keep Dewar. ABB is about to be 25. There's probably a reason he's still playing in the AHL, and it isn't because Tampa is so deep they can't possibly figure out how to get him NHL time.

The money is tight. I couldn't fit Dewar's 1,017 QO under the cap.

Aw, shucks. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I believe we can keep him around on a shorter deal that keeps his AAV down.

He doesn't need to get his QO unless you're only offering him a one year deal. Pay him less, give him more term. I love Dewar and think he's going to be a good bottom six guy for us, but he has 30 NHL games and 5 points. He doesn't need to be paid over 1M.
