Description
Look, Boston fans, sorry, but everyone's gonna take a swing at this until a new coach is hired and the decision on what their plan going forward is going to be is settled.

TRADES
-Pasta gets #13 this year, a 1st next year, a young NHL-ready roster player in Oliver Wahlstrom, and a recent 1st who had a good year in the AHL in Simon Holmstrom. There's not much else that would be available and be appetizing to Boston - if they wanted one of Bolduc, Dufour or Wilde I wouldn't really have a problem adding, or if they wanted another 2nd/3rd rounder. There's some room to play here but this is a solid basis for deal, to me.

-Kulikov loses the game of musical chairs in Minnesota and gets them a little breathing room under the cap. He'll be perfectly acceptable as LD2 next to Dobson.

-You need to move one of Bailey or Beau to make the cap work. Anaheim is a possible destination for a veteran winger like Josh Bailey, considering the amount of young talent they have tearing it up. Bailey would thrive in a middle-6 role on that team, and would help replace some of the leadership that's leaving with Ryan Getzlaf's retirment (Josh has been an alternate captain for 6 years now). Return is irrelevant, dealer's choice on what Anaheim sends back.

I kept Varlamov but he can potentially be moved to free up more cap; I also didn't need to sign Dominik Simon but I am intrigued to see how he might play on this line (and it doesn't help to have some lower cost bottom-6 guys signed for 2023-24 with Barzal & Pasta needing new deals.)

A lot to give up for one year of Pasta. And really with no cap how do resign Barzal, Mayfield and Pasta next season with the only big expiring contract is Varlamov?

They don’t need to re-sign Mayfield

Personally, I'd let Mayfield walk after next year. He's a great player who deserves $3-4M easy, but if I'm in charge of the Isles, I'm happy to let someone else pay that much for his age 31-34 seasons. RD3 is an easy spot to fill in UFA for ~$2M, I wouldn't want to spend much more than that.

I think you could get Barzal & Pasta to sign matching deals - they're only a year apart in age so getting them both signed to 8x$9M might be tight against the cap but it basically locks in your top guys for the rest of their useful years. It'll be tight for the first couple years but once the Palmieri/Lee/Nelson deals start aging out you'll be out of the woods.

Not enough. Bruins don't want to trade Pastrnak and don't have to. It should take a big overpay.

I mean, it's basically the Eichel package. You get a roster player, a recent 1st rounder with upside, and a pair of 1sts (Vegas actually only sent out a 1st & 2nd while getting back a 3rd, but we'll call this fair value in the difference between Alex Tuch and Oliver Wahlstrom's track records to date). I'd argue a fair comp would be the Erik Karlsson deal (top-3 in the league at his position, last year before UFA) and even he only had one first rounder come back in that trade - he got two roster players in Chris Tierney/Dylan DeMelo, an AHL lottery ticket in Rufolf Balcers, a recent 1st rounder in Josh Norris, and a 1st/2nd/3rd combo.

I'd be fine throwing in another B-tier prospect or a late 2nd/3rd rounder to get the deal over the hump, but I think there's recent history that shows that this kind of package is more than fair value.
