Description
A lot of IF's go into this so people might think it's a bit wild, but bare with me lol.

1) I can 100% see NJ go "off the board" and take Nemec #2. Honestly I think 2-5 in the draft is quite even. While NJ could use more size/skill in the top 6, Nemec hits just as much of a need as an elite RHD prospect if we lose Severson to UFA (I could see contract negotiations go sideways). Also, this was partially assuming we get Gaudreau in FA which I know it basically impossible to bank on considering the draft is before free agency. Look at this as a realistic "best case scenario". We could always draftNemec and trade for Fiala instead (which most likely won't include the #2 in the trade) which would probably provide a better long term financial situation.

2) Bernier could go 2 ways: He either heals perfectly and can play, or his hip injury causes more issues and we put him on LTIR island. I went with the LTIR route to give us the cap space which seems realistic because our owners have shown they aren't afraid to spend $ to get us competitive again. If they wanted to get the salary off the books we could just trade his contract to a team who could use the LTIR space. Keeping it provides flexibility to give Campbell the $ he's earned while not committing to a long term contract. If Campbell wants more years, we could always approach Husso if he reaches FA.

4) I think if Holtz were to make the team, then Tatar would be moved. I chose the safe route...keep Tatar to rebound (similar to Johnsson this year) and let Holtz round his game out in Utica.

3) All trades were mostly just to show expected return. We probably want cap flexibility and dont need to replace them with players/prospects.

I know Habs had interest in Zacha at the TDL, but either Marek or Friedman recently reported that they only inquired about him and never really negotiated. As it stands now, Habs are over the cap so if they did trade for Zacha, salary would have to head the other way. That said, paying a 2 + 3 for a career high 36 points is pretty steep and Habs are in no position to be sacrificing assets for more of the same.

This is based on nothing but my gut, but I could see a Drouin-Zacha type swap: two players drafted high who have never really lived up to expectations and could use a change of scenery. Both also carry very little risk seeing as how Drouin only has 1 year left on his contract and NJD could move on after next season if the fit wasn't right. As for Zacha, Habs wouldn't be obligated to sign him long-term and could walk if things didn't work out.

One thing that I'd argue is "wanting more cap flexibility": NJD is one of the rare teams who have their key pieces signed long-term and aren't currently in a cap crunch. Aside from Bratt this season and Yegor next year, there's no other contract that really stands out to me. I'd argue that they're in good financial health.

Lots of talent in New jersey. They're gonna be fun to watch these next few years.

Cheers!

I don't think Habs have any interest in Zacha, but the value is fair

I wouldn't mind it if Devils drafted Nemec, I'd prefer him over Slafkovsky.
Don't think it'd make sense to put him in the lineup right away however.
Between Walsh, Bahl and Okhotiuk there should be enough cover for that spot.

JG contract looks a bit optimistic, think it'd have to be 10 figures at max term.
I like the Campbell signing.

Return for Zacha looks fine, but I don't see the point in trading McLeod and Johnsson.
Given how unfortunate this team is with injuries I think that depth would be more important the bag of essentially nothing you got in return for them.

Decent AGM overall, thumbs up.

Yea! Totally makes sense. Not sure if you saw my notes above but the trades were mostly to represent the expected return. MTL was jsut a choice because they were linked to him at some point. You also should look at the PPG rather than total. Last year he was on a 57 point pace while this year 40+. He just turned 25 as well, so hes got good room to grow. I like a late 2nd and a 3rd is fair; we just don't need to take $ back in the deal.
