No team is paying the Pens anything to take 3 years of Pettersson at 4.02 mil. The 2nd rounder would be going from the Pens to the Yotes and there is nothing coming back from AZ. This would also apply to Zucker

Pettersson is a capable 2nd pairing defenseman who is still 26. I think the people who don't like his deal see that it's over $4 mil and then feel like it's more than it actually is, kind of the opposite of how prices are often $x.99.

It's not about Pettersson being a bad player or not capable, it's the situation the Pens are in. It's exactly the same as the Flyers moving Ghost to the Yotes last year. If the Pens want to move his money out to sign Letang and Malkin then they need move out Petterson or Zucker or both, and knowing that why would any team send back anything of value to the Pens? They wouldn't. And if your the Pens, it's either pay a sweetener to move out the money or lose Letang and Malkin.
