Description
MacLellan is one of the most honest GMs in the league, and he just had a press conference today ahead of the draft (https://twitter.com/SamanthaJPell/status/1544688607360913410?s=20&t=Mk6cn5xBcHXzc5HPX-cJYQ). From this:

They will operate as if Backstrom will be able to return during the regular season
McMichael, Lapierre, and Protas will get extended looks
One of the two goalies will be replaced w a vet

I think they will end up keeping Eller in this scenario as a fallback if McMichael/Lapierre/Protas aren't ready for 3c. Everyone on the taxi squad are first callups from hershey / extras when Bcakstrom/Wilson/Alexeyev come back from injury.

An extremely underwhelming summer, but if they think Backstrom will come back during the regular season this is what they're going to have to do.

Yea I would probably hope for more for a samsonov return but don't think its that far off. Most important is that he's moved for futures

unconfirmed source yesterday heard that Keumper is very close to re sign in Colorado so Caps could be running back the same goalie tandem whether they like it or not...Maybe they do trade one of VV and Sammy as Bmac hates paying RFA's. I wonder if they would bring in Holtby for a year or two? He has his home there and would be a good 1B to whomever the Caps keep.

Yea I don't think he's worried about paying sammy and vv but playing both of them again next year lol. Didn't see the Kuemper rumor, but either him, campbell, or husso would work. I could see them still trading for Gibson/Ullmark/Varlamov as well, but I think it will cost way too much to get any of them so would rather go FA

Don't forget that Hagelin may be in the same situation where they feel they can't spend his cap hit because he might come back. From Tarik earlier today:

Quote:
4. The status of veteran winger Carl Hagelin, who was lost for the season after he suffered a freak eye injury during a March practice, also remains unclear at the moment.

“He has a more of a later checkup in August for final determination of how the surgery completely healed or how much the surgery has done for his eyesight,” MacLellan said. “So we’ll have to wait until that appointment to get a better indication of where he’s at.”

At this point even if Kuemper's available they might not have room sign him. This team is screwed.
