You got cap issues? You need to move something that no one else will move for you? No problem - come on down to Crazy Billy's Discount Hockey Barn and we'll get those pesky contracts out the door for you, and we promise we'll take -good- care of you!
Just ask Minnesota - they spent a big pick and then big money on their shiny new goalie and didn't have room for their old one! Cam Talbot's now a proud member of the Coyotes, and Mr. Bill Guerin walked out with a 4th rounder for his trade in!
What about Chuck Fletcher from Philadelphia? He had a huuuuge James van Riemsdyk he was trying to find a new home for, but no one had the space for him! So Chuck came down to Uncle Billy's, and I told him "Well Mr. Fletcher, I can take that JVR off your hands - but I think you also might need to get rid of that Ivan Provorov too, right? Think of all the space you'll have once they're out of your way!" I gave him a couple picks and some roster bodies for those two, boy oh boy can you imagine how happy he was to clear almost $13M in cap space and get a young goalie he could dream on in the deal too!
Last up, ol' Kenny Holland from north of the border, Edmonton town he said, came calling into Uncle Billy's. He had a Tyson Barrie just gathering dust ever since he got his hands on his Cody Ceci and Evan Bouchard, and he couldn't fix the rest of his house until that Tyson was out of there! Well, ol' Billy said to him "Kenny, gimme that Tyson, throw in a third, and I'll give you a 4th and some Mayo for your bottom pair!" Let me tell you, Kenny boy just about kissed me when I told him about that deal.
But it's not just trade-ins at Uncle Billy's, oh no sir, we love some reclamation projects. Just the other day, let me tell you, I found this Chris Tierney out on the street. A few years ago a Chris Tierney would get you 40, 45 points easy - but not so much the last couple seasons. But Uncle Billy decided to take a chance on that Chris Tierney, brought him in on a small deal and gave him some ice time to try and see if he could be the CT he used to be.
I like to think we've got a winning team down here at the Discount Hockey Barn, with some great top shelf selections and a surprising amount of depth options ready to go. But even if they don't work out, we've got the space to eat some of that money and ship em out to one of the big boys and get some new toys back to try it all over again - there's nothing Uncle Billy loves more than the ol' turn, churn, and burn baby!
TL;DR for the description: I think this team can succeed building out from the back. Cam Talbot needs a new home and solidifies goal with Vejmelka being a good backup. Weaponize your cap space - Philly needs to get rid of JVR so see if you can eat his deal and bring in Ivan Provorov without having to give up the moon. Get Tyson Barrie for nothing since Edmonton has two good RHD right now and could use the space for other upgrades. You've got 4 solid D with two good prospects now; JVR slides into the top line to bring a finishing touch and your middle 6 is a good mix of up and coming dudes with some success.
I don't think this team makes the playoffs but I think they're feisty as hell and no one wants to play them.
Man, Philly should just give you guys Konecny, Bruno, Forester, Sanhiem and maybe Hart as well… it is Fletcher after all lol
Philly is a tough team to read this summer - I know they want to get rid of JVR and they've got a ton of money tied up in their top 4. Risto just re-signed so they can't move him, Ellis needs to show he's healthy again before he has trade value, and I think that Sanheim is the better guy to keep because of his pending UFA status - you can extend him if the team turns it around and gets back into contention this year, or cash him in for a big package at the TDL.
I think Arizona should add more here, I'm just not sure what the lineup on prospects would be - not really a Coyotes fan so I don't know what the read on their farm system is, but I would honestly only put McBain and Cooley as the untouchables if you wanted to add/swap out a guy in this deal.
Well, except we do have room for Talbot. We ran a 1A/1B system with them last season (which we should have done in the playoffs too) and it worked great. The plan is to do the same this season.

I still think someone has to move on that roster - you've got only $1.4M in cap space with 11 F/7D/2 goalies signed as of right now. Need another couple forwards to run a full 23 man roster, and the only place you're really going to be able to shed cap from is either D (Kulikov?) or goalie(Talbot). I feel like you can move Cam and his $3.667M cap hit and sign a UFA like Scott Wedgewood or Eric Comrie for $1.5Mish and save $2M for deadline deals and get 85-90% of the production you would've had from Talbot - not fully ideal but I think definitely an option to explore.
