Description
For those who missed Kent Hughes' interview, he confirmed that he will not retain any salary, nor will he include picks or prospects, to move Petry. His preference is to keep him.

That being said, with the Burns and Patches trades from yesterday, moving salary of aging players is costly or doesn't get much of anything. So best case scenario now for MTL is just a 2nd rd pick (or prospect equivalent), and that's really best case scenario.

Looks like Petry will be staying with MTL.

I interpreted it to be he will let him go for free if he doesn’t have to retain salary and add futures.

He literally said he'd rather keep him than move him. So I'm 100% certain he will not trade him for "future considerations" lol

I must have had it wrong then.

I thought it was…anything negative (retention, adding a pick to move him, etc) and he’d rather keep him. And anything positive at full salary, he moves him. In other words, he would take a 7th rounder for him.

But habs fans would know better than I would.

The Patches and Burns trades are not indicative of the market. SJ is over a barrel waiting on the Kane ruling and needed to clear cap space desperately incase they had to take Kane back at 7 mil (I suspect they already have a good idea this is likely to happen). The Patches trade was also a strict cap dump scenario where Vegas was over the cap and needed to pay to move salary. Montreal is not in either of these situations. Also since Burns had a strict 3 team trade list that further complicated his trade and Patches had a 10 team no trade list which may have complicated things for him as well.

I think the following quote is what Blazingbat is referring to

"Jeff Petry is a good defenceman. If we trade Jeff Petry, today or in the future, it must improve our team.”
