Description
Once season starts I think Canes need to go out and address the shortly filled goal-scoring hole. Somebody like Kane makes sense to me over guys like Tank or Miller b/c the returns CHI is looking for is futures versus NHL talent (like a Necas). Not sure if this is enough value going back but prospects and picks would be the base of the deal and I'd include pretty much anything outside of Drury or Morrow right now. Send another pick to a third team for retention on Kane to lower his cap hit even more. Plus CHI can take on somebody like Gardiner if he proves that he's healthy and can play in the beginning of the season - can flip him at deadline for a mid pick or use him to keep at cap floor if they trade their more expensive guys in Kane & Toews.

Traded for Dermott to fill in 3LD but would be open to trading for other bottom pairing guys making 1-2M. This should help keep some space open for when Patches comes back assuming it's before the playoffs. Will likely have other injuries or can make other minor moves to clear cap space at the deadline if needed but I don't think Canes should bank on Patches returning right at 6 months since it's a serious injury and who knows how he'll recover from it.

I like Kane. And I do like the idea of a 3-way trade to get more retention. Would prefer to move Bear in a trade for Soucy with a little retention if we could. That top six looks good.

Soucy would be a solid option, wouldn't mind that at all if a deal could be worked out.

I feel like Kane would cost a little more going to Chicago and maybe a little more on 2.6 mil retention. Like a second 1st instead of the 3rd due to you also dumping Gardiner and maybe up that 4th to a 3rd or add a 5th/6th. The team looks insane tho!

2 firsts would be tough for a rental, especially if it’s coming closer to the TDL but maybe he fetches that. Gardiner is def a cap component to the deal but my thought was in this scenario he’d show some value and that he can stay healthy so CHI can flip him for a pick as well.

I get where you’re coming from tho - package is a base so could be adjusted. Just trying to think how the canes can fill the hole patches briefly (conceptually) filled.

True, maybe a better prospect instead of a 2nd first would help, Gardiner get paid more real money this year than his cap hit so that kind of hurts his value a bit. Still Patches getting injured, albeit being sad, creates an opportunity now for the Canes to take a play out of the Lighting playbook.
