Description
Trade for Meier at the deadline to add another elite forward that they desperately need -- feel free to add whatever other mid round picks or lesser prospects but I would consider McMichael + 1st as the base of a deal. Re-sign Orlov, Jensen to provide stability at D. Bridge Fehervary and worry about the consequences if he breaks out later. Go big for ROR as 2c if Backstrom is done. My guess will be that Hath and TVR will price themselves out of DC so sign Motte and Holl or similar guys as their replacements. Think Strome will price himself out as well, move for a 2nd like the Canes did with DeAngelo -- if the cap only goes up a million or so, sign Strome around 5x5 instead of ROR.

if it's at the deadline it would depend on how Washington is doing. Since they'd probably only trade for Meier if they thought they'd make the playoffs I think SJ declines.

I don’t see San Jose retaining $3 mil and taking Eller back for what Meier is worth without taking on the $6+ mil and the fact that he’s an RFA and not a rental

Retention and taking back Eller would depend completely on the LTIR situation at the deadline. Wouldn't be necessary if for example Brown's lower body injury will keep him out until the playoffs or Backstrom has to retire. Either way, Eller is a UFA so taking him back to grease the wheels wouldn't cost too much.

If SJ decides to move him, I would expect one top prospect (McMichael or Lapierre, even Protas), one 1st round pick (could be 23 for the better draft or 24 to bet on Caps regressing), one lesser prospect (Rybynski, Johnson, Suzdalev, etc.), and one or two mid round picks. Look at previous pending RFA or 1 year to UFA wingers who have been dealt -- Fiala, Stone, Pacioretty are IMO most direct comps -- this is around what they return.
