Description
***Wish I had posted this a few weeks ago because it looks like I am just dog piling on the Leafs with everyone else. I had been thinking about this and Leaf Fans...and I guess even other team's fans...and the reactions to Leaf management's moves. I started this while the Leafs were on their road trip but I will post it now.***

Just looking back the last couple of years to see what fans were crying out for with players that had contracts with the Leafs...

...it seemed OBVIOUS at the time BUT the Leafs management went against it...

- Leafs needed a soild RHD so management traded 2 good prospects and a 1st round pick for a solid LHD Muzzin
- McCann kept and Holl exposed
- Hyman kept @ $4.375 x 8 years he wanted or $5 x 7 years he signed for in Edm. He was let go so the Leafs could keep the 'core' together
- Nylander is skilled but not needed with Hyman around but Nylander has never been traded because he is one of the 'core'. (maybe could have been traded for TOP defensive help)
- Marchment continue to be developed and not traded for a skilled 5'7" winger
- Kadri on a FANTASTIC contract not dumped for 1 year of a one dimensional RHD and an inferior forward
- Mitch's dad was complaining on social media that Mitch needed to be paid like Matthews showing the entitlement the Marners felt his WHOLE career as a Leaf. Blockbuster trade anyone?? Please??

I put Adam Larsson as a placeholder but even with sulking Marner in the lineup the Leafs still would have $6.7 MIL to bring in a rugged RHD

I slipped Luke Schenn in for fun as he could finish his career with the team who drafted him... :)

- if the Leafs lose Aube-Kubel on waivers for nothing I think they will also quickly miss the style of hockey he brings. Why him over Gaudet??

Anyway, this isn't revisionist rants, this is reiterating what fans believed when each thing happened. I don't understand the Leafs management.
Trades
1.
SEA
    - we traded for this guy and fans were pleased with his skill and were shocked when he was left exposed instead of Holl
    2.
    EDM
      - he was a player who always wanted to play for the Leafs and we lost him for NOTHING. He was on a 28 goal pace, RH shot and is a tenacious forechecker. Signed for $5 MIL a year for 7 years. Rumour was he was will to spread the same money over 8 years for the Leafs but the Leafs management didn't want to break up the core so the let Hyman walk.

BTW he is on an admittedly unsustainable 55 goal pace currently. 30+ goals shouldn't be out of the question though...ie: like Nylander but physically engaged for almost $2 MIL less a year.
      3.
      SEA
The kind of partner needed for an offensive minded LHD
        4.
        VAN
          - 3rd pair RHD on a cheap contract
          5.
          DAL
          1. Malgin, Denis
          Additional Details:
          - not saying that Malgin isn't everything you want in a NHL winger but no one liked the trade from the day it happened
          6.
          CGY
          1. Kerfoot, Alexander
          Additional Details:
          - Kadri loved playing for Toronto and always wore his heart on his sleave...even when no other Leaf player would. Like the Marchment trade...no Leaf fan liked this trade to Colorado when it happened

          I hope Gio finds you.

Also, if you didn't understand McCann don't post about him.

          Gio probably thinks it's WWE

So you feel that it was best to get McCann to simply protect Holl and Kerfoot?

RHD is absolutely a need for the Leafs and management knew this for a long time, they just aren't readily available. They definitely done their due diligence on the matter.
-Muzzin was absolutely the type of defender the Leafs needed at the time regardless of hand. Result: team got better.
          - The reason why Kadri was traded is two part 1) he was deemed a liability after getting suspended twice (he did it again in Colorado, could have gotten suspended this year too) but 2) they were 0/3 in the 1st round and C was a position of strength, so they targetted a C+RD. Kadri was going to be traded for Backlund and Brodie (not a RHD but could play well) I think but he nixed that trade then he was traded for Kerfoot+Barrie.
          -They signed Brodie
-They protected Holl, McMann was basically the same same player as Kerfoot but a better shooter. So Dubas protected his only RHD at the time that was really an NHLer and they would have been fine whether McCann or Kerfoot.
-They inquired about pretty much every RD that became available via trade and approached every RD that hit FA even Hamilton and Pietrangelo to see if they can fit them in even when they were facing a super cap crunch.

Not sure how you are suggesting Nylander be traded for a RD when you hated the Kadri move. If Nylander got traded to another team he would probably have been the first and maybe only guy everyone mentions that Dubas traded away forget Kadri and Marchment (who wasn't able to crack the line up so was traded, glad Dubas didn't end his NHL career because of being scared he thrives elsewhere). Hyman is nice but he's definitely not worth losing Nylander over. With Nylander+Marner+Tavares, this team still has a playoff window even if Matthews walks.

It was about protecting Holl and then ending up with either McCann or Kerfoot, so thay they don't lose anything. If Holl got taken they need a RHD then have two guys who fill a similar role.

Ok. Then remove both goalies, Brodie, Sandin, Liljegren, Gio, and the entire bottom 6. You can't have it both ways. Can't do something like this without subtracting the guys Dubas did get because you do have to give up to get. This team is also not even like THAT much better than the current team to be honest.
