Description
Apparently Don Sweeney is still trolling for a Left Shot Left Defenseman. He's been linked most strongly to Minnesota and Brodin or Scandella. The guy to have gotten was Methot, if the price was only a 2nd pick and rando prospect. He'd have fit in great and could have been the top pair LD the year after Chara retires.

Don sucks at building a team. We've drafted 6 Defenseman in the first 2 rounds the last 3 years. We've only drafted 5 forwards that meet that criteria over that term. The last time I checked the average NHL team plays twice as many forwards (12) as defenseman (6) in a game.

The funniest thing in all of this was Don Sweeney referenced the Bruins getting down to their 10 defenseman as a reason to acquire more high end dmen at the draft. That doesn't happen every year and we didn't even lose because of that. We scored 13 goals in 6 games in the playoffs. To put that number into perspective, Pittsburg scored 21 goals in their 5 game first round series. Every team plays better defense in the playoffs, but if you're barely scoring 2 goals a game your chances of winning are almost nonexistent. We should be beefing up our forward ranks, as we don't really have any first line talent prospects.... at best Senyshyn is the only one. JFK is a future 2nd liner most likely, DeBrusk as well, Bjork too, Cehlarik is 3rd liner, Heinen also and so is Gabrielle.

Now we're got 4 guys who have the potential to be Top 4 LHD. Vaakanainen, Zboril, Lindgren and Lauzon... all potential top 4 left handed defensemen. Adding on top of our other 2 guys named Grzelcyk and O'Gara who could be top 6 LHD. It's almost as if Sweeney still believes the thoughts he must have had as an NHL defenseman to stay in the league: That his role as a defenseman was the most important. Sure, that's the eye of the tiger that you need to have to compete and stay in the league, but once your done playing you need to evolve, especially if you rise to the role of a GM.

This guy is a toolbag with tunnel vision who's not building a full team. Unless we plan on flipping some of our young defensemen for some forward help; we're going to be screwed longterm.

He's talked a lot about building a core like the one we built through the draft that got us our last cup, but there are no similarities of that one to this one. Our core we built through the draft was basically getting Krejci, Bergeron, Marchand and Lucic in a 4 year window. I don't see any defensemen in there at all, yet that's where the emphasis is for us now. I'm almost hoping we miss the playoffs this year, just to get rid of him and his defenseman oriented philosophy.

I agree with you 100%, this is a perfect analysis of what is going on in Boston. They have plenty of potential on defense. In my opinion, they have the guys to be one of the best defensive teams in the league. Backes, Krejci, and Bergy are fantastic two way players with great face off percentages. The reality is the offense isn't that impactful. The reason Pittsburgh won their last two cups is because they learned the best defense is a good offense. Pittsburgh could cycle a puck over and over and kill so much time. And when they need a goal, Sid or Geno step on the ice and suddenly the other team is on it's heels. Boston simply needs an impact forward.

people are seriously overrating Marc Methot, hes a top 4 defensmen at best. Also, Cam Neely is just as much a problem as sweeney is. They both need to be gone

What the biggest demand in the NHL right now? Young d-men with top pairing/top 4 potential. Wingers are a dime a dozen, but quality d-men are hard to find. Nashville is a perfect example as they stockpiled d-men and then flipped one for the young forward they needed in RJ. Sweeney has been the GM for 2 seasons (3 drafts) so how can you honestly say he doesn't know how to build a team? 3 of his draft picks have already made their NHL debuts and 2 were relied on heavily their rookie years (one in the playoffs with ZERO experience).

The fact that you say we have no first line talent is laughable and you just putting on your arm-chair scout hat. How many people had Bergeron or Marchand as 1st line talents when they were drafted? How about a guy like Johnny Hockey or the numerous other non 1st rounder that are 1st line talents.

As far as the scoring goes, why don't you look to the guys that were here. 13 goals in 6 games....Marchand managed 1 goal, Pasta and Bergy with 2 each, Backes with 1 goal, Vatrano 1 goal, Spooner 0 goals, Chara 0 goals, Krejci 0 goals. Then you factor in half the defense being hurt and BOOM there is the problem. You didn't even have your top scoring d-man in the line-up because of injury....the guy who was nearly top 5 among d-men in scoring was out and your wonder why we only scored 12 goals in 6 games.

Try looking big picture and not just going with the flow like everyone else and trying to blame Sweeney. The guy was handed a pile of **** with cap issues because of the stupidity of PC and after 1 year got us back into the playoffs, restock our prospect pool and in two drafts rebuilt half of our top 4 w/ young RHD (something most teams are struggling to find) that will contribute to this team for the next 10-15 years.

I agree on you with Methot (not so much on Sweeney) as he had the benefit of playing with one of the NHL best defensemen. Case in point is his negative CF% rel which tells me the team possessed the puck more when he was of the ice than on it.
