Description
Saw this topic in the forums and wanted to see what the Leafs would look like if they made some different decisions in 2021. Going back to the Expansion Draft - What if TOR protected McCann and did not extend Rielly to a 7.5Mx8 contract?

New Protection List (7/3/1):

Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Nylander
Kerfoot
McCann
Engvall
Muzzin
Rielly
Brodie
Campbell

Which leaves Dermott or Holl as the likely pick by Seattle, lets say they take the younger Dermott

Rielly leaves as a UFA which gives the Leafs the cap space to extend McCann 5x5 (it was suggested that McCann may not have signed for 5M AAV in Toronto - if so then TOR could move Holl or run a <23 man roster to give them some extra space)

With the extra spot open on defense, TOR makes a big splash by trading for Jakob Chychrun. Not sure of the price so just fill that in with whatever you think is reasonable. If I had to guess maybe Robertson + Niemela + 1st + 2nd?

Imo this is a more balanced team than the irl Leafs but also comes at the expense of futures from the Chychrun trade

Lets be honest while Chycrun would have been nice with the injuries and price it would have taken to get him would have made us go really

As 2 1sts and prospects for him would have made me go just keep Rielly and figure out the forward depth at the TDL.

And there are so many factors to consider like would Muzzin have suffered his random injury keeping him out. Would we have added Timmins or Hunt. As we cant just go seasons the same this and that.

Plus McCann would have demanded more being on Matthews and Marners wing. Would not have been surprised if he pushed 70+ points and asked for 6+ mill

But all this at the cost of a man who had been with the team for 12 years. Idk loyalty takes preference does it not. As while Rielly has his flaws hes been on the Leafs through it all and watched guys like Matthews, Nylander, Marner enter while former teammates like JVR, Bozak, and Kadri go. Speaking of Kadri man idk about u but if we let Rielly go I swear it would have been Kadri 2.0

Rn Leafs are tied for 2nd in the NHL with Rielly. And even with this I dont see them catching Boston so there really aint much of a change

Dubas got money to work with at the TDL so just trade out Kerfoot and bring in a 5mill wing that wont cost what Chycrun would have lul. Sure McCann would have been nice but this TDL has guys on par

PHI also gifted Ghost to ARI that summer, who would have more than made up any offence lost by Rielly.

But hey, we are still 3rd overall in the league

So the Leafs get McCann and Chychrum at the cost of Reilly and the 1st, 2nd, Robertson and Niemela.... That seems like a losing proposition for the Leafs. Then next season I would rather have the cap to resign Bunting and all those young assets and Reilly instead of Chychrun and McCamm

Agreed, I do feel Dubas will spend assets but hes not gonna spend multiple 1sts or a bunch of his good prospects. Maybe a 1st and one of em for a top 6 LW but nothing crazy like the Chycrun packages we have seen.

As for Bunting what u think his deals gonna look like

To me there are 2 scenerio's

      1. He takes a Paul deal. Low money longer term 3.15 mill x 7 years

      2. He takes an Iafallo type deal 4mill x 4 years

And yeah the amount of assets we would have lost just dont make it seem right. As the guys been with us for 13 years and if we remember the last guy we drove out he won the cup (aka Kadri) imagine if that happened with Rielly. Dubas would not survive.

IMO would be silly for Bunting to do the Paul deal. The Leafs could buy him later and he wouldn't recoup the money he rightfully deserves
Last week I checked some comparables. Among LWers, Bunting was 23rd in points and 24 in goals, and 3rd best in plus minus. The 23rd LW paid was making 6m.
I don't see how you couldn't be offered at least 5m from some team.. For instance Jersey is losing 4.5m Tatar and the Habs losing 5.5m Drouin, Hawks have cap, Wings and Sabres have cap.
If it's just a money issue, the Leafs can't compete.
