Description
With Caufield out for the year, and with half the rest of the team injured long-term, the Habs are basically packing it in - not that they were primed to make a run, but they at least were showing some progress with their young core.

Now, what to do with this team? Well, it's still a flat cap world, and there are still teams that will want to clear space to make some big moves, so why not take advantage of that?

Here's a few moves that I think could make sense for the Habs to acquire a few extra picks and a couple of warm bodies they can use so they're not stripping Laval to the studs over the last half of the season. Tried to base the values on the prior cap retention trades, and based them on how much cap the team was saving for the buried player hit, not the full cap hit.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Brossoit, Laurent
  2. Ellis, Noah [Reserve List]
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Clearing Brossoit gives the Knights $1.2M in extra cap space to upgrade their Western Conference-leading team.
VGK
  1. 2023 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Montreal gets an intriguing RHD prospect - Ellis is 6'2" and a good passer who's a bit buried on a stacked UMass team. Vegas also gives up this year's 3rd but get back their own 4th.
2.
MTL
  1. Barabosha, Artem [Reserve List]
  2. Johnsson, Andreas
  3. 2024 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Devils shed $2.275M in cap for a deadline move, while giving up an intriguing RHD project & moving down in next year's draft.
NJD
  1. 2024 7th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Montreal gets a veteran body so they're not running out 3 lines of guys on their ELCs, plus gets a guy in Barabosha who has potential to become the right-handed Xhekaj.
3.
MTL
  1. Donskoi, Joonas
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The Kraken have maintained strong playoff position through nearly the All-Star Break - while they may not go all in, they can clear $3.9M in cap and target a potentially bigger fish than they would have without this move.
SEA
  1. 2023 5th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Just a pick upgrade - difference between the potential picks is equal to a mid-3rd rounder, which should be suffice to eat $3.9M of cap over the last 6 weeks of the season.

I like it. If teams aren't willing to pay to dump these players, I think the team could position itself as a third-party retention option instead of wasting those retention spots to get minimal returns on Dadonov and Drouin.

We would give away Johnsson for free, but I doubt we would pay to move him. He is UFA at season's end and we are not all that likely to be adding much during the season, so probably won't need the space.

I like the Barabosha-WiFi comp though
